Redone 2013 Honda Civic seems to appease Consumer Reports

2013 Honda Civic undergoing first testing by Consumer Reports - video screencap

Consumer Reports and the Honda Civic appear to have kissed and made up. Following the compact's substantial "emergency refresh" after just one year on the market, CR got its hands on the vehicle for a quick drive. While the evaluation was far from the standard CR test, the organization found the 2013 Civic to offer a better tuned suspension and less vague steering at first blush. While the split-tier dash still hangs around for another few years, the cabin has ditched much of its oddly textured plastic bits in favor of soft touch materials with nicer detailing. That fact also won the new model points over its predecessor.

As you may recall, the 2012 Civic scored too low in Consumer Report evaluations to earn a "Recommended" rating. That fall from grace marked the first time the Honda model failed to make the cut, though that news didn't stop buyers from flocking to the vehicle. Consumer Reports will buy its own Civic and evaluate it once again soon. In the interim, you can check out the organization's initial impressions by scrolling down, as well as the brief writeup in the link below.

Senator calling for answers from Hyundai and Kia over MPG debacle

2012 Kia Rio sedan - front three-quarter view, white

Hyundai and Kia have already gone public with plans to make good on the inflated fuel economy claims scandal that has rocked both companies in recent weeks. But one US senator, Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), is skeptical that the general public will see much good from the proposal, and he's looking for answers.

To recap: Hyundai/Kia have agreed to compensate owners of 900,000 affected vehicles for real versus previously claimed fuel mileage (as well as adding in a one-percent premium), by way of pre-loaded debit cards. It has been speculated that this payout could crest $100 million by the time the Korean automakers are done writing checks.

Said Rockefeller to The Detroit News, "While I believe this is a positive step, I am concerned that many affected customers may not learn about the program or may find it burdensome to participate in the program." Rockefeller would reportedly like to see a monitoring system for the paybacks more clearly defined, with the goal being as many wronged car buyers as possible getting the recompense that they're due.

For its part, the EPA is continuing its probe into the matter, and the government agency could yet pursue civil penalties against the automakers.

Rick Wagoner wants to make your next test drive more fun

tred homepage

Actually, it's not Rick Wagoner all by himself, but the ex-GM chairman is working with a team of tech entrepreneurs who make up Tred, a new test drive concierge service. Tred is still in beta, but the idea is that you pick the cars you'd like to test drive, schedule delivery by concierges who are working to get positive feedback from folks like you and then try out the vehicles you're considering on the roads you know.

There's been good in-roads for Tred in the Seattle area for both dealers and shoppers. How Tred manages to convert a delivery service that's asking for feedback into actual profit will be something to watch. Ask our auto-test fleet people, delivering cars is a time-intensive undertaking that requires people and insurance above and beyond the lot attendants at most car dealerships. Also, dealerships themselves can offer this kind of service, especially a multi-line dealer group, and they've got a book full of relationships from which to start.

In other words, Tred may have a long road to ... tread. We'll be watching.

Chevy Volt again tops Consumer Reports Owner-Satisfaction Survey

The Chevrolet Volt has done the double, nearly replicating its triumph from last year: For its annual Owner Satisfaction Survey, the Consumer Reports National Research Center asked Consumer Reports readers, "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had it to do all over again?" Ninety-two percent of Volt owners answered "Definitely yes," topping nearly 250 other models for which responses were received. The only difference between this year and last is that in 2011, the Volt won the title thanks to 93 percent of its owners.

Other fuel sippers earning garlands were the Toyota Camry Hybrid, Toyota Prius and Prius C, and the Nissan Leaf. The sports category also had some repeat play in the top spots, last year's twosome of the Porsche 911 and V8 Dodge Challenger were second and third, joined by the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Mustang. The luxury segment was led by the Audi A7, Lexus GS and Audi A6.

Conversely, those stuck in the dog shed out back were fronted by the Nissan Versa, the only car to register a score lower than 50 percent. It didn't lack for company, sharing its plot of dirt with the V6-powered twins the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, the Nissan Armada, Suzuki SX4 and Mitsubishi Outlander SUVs.

There's a press release below with more information. Condensed results are available to anyone on the Consumer Reports site, the complete results viewable online for subscribers and in the January issue.

Fashion designer Jeremy Scott gives Smart Fortwo Electric some wing bling [w/video]

Smart ForJeremy

If you were to gaze upon the Smart Fortwo Electric Drive and ponder what you might add to sort of, you know, set it off a bit, you probably wouldn't consider adding a pair of wings. That's because you are not Jeremy Scott. He, on the other hand, would do exactly that. And has.

That's right, that winged wonder you see pictured above is not some sort of Redbull-induced hallucination. Rather, it is the result of a creative collaboration between Mercedes-Benz Cars Advanced Design Studios and the aforementioned famed fashion designer called, appropriately enough, the Smart ForJeremy. And, it has just made its debut at the LA Auto Show.

Besides the faux-feather flourishes that light up when the brakes are applied, the outward appearance of this 2013 limited special edition is tarted up with a custom set of propeller-inspired wheels with just enough shiny to balance the chromed finish of its tridion shell, mirrors and, um, "eyebrows."

Likewise, the interior is not exactly a study in subtlety. An aeronautical art deco theme is in full effect within the confines of the white, nappa-leather-swathed cabin, with its yoke-like steering wheel serving as the dominating focal point. If that's not enough to remind that you are in a road-going flight of fancy, it also boasts custom four-point seat belts and enough chrome trimmings scattered about to require sunglasses for safe piloting.

While we can't say exactly what kind of flap it will cause in showrooms we estimate a price tag ranging somewhere from "Are you freaking kidding me?" to just north of "Would you have any Grey Poupon?" we don't expect more than a very small flock to be offered for sale.

Scroll down below for all the available details in the official press release, along with video including footage of the Smart ForJeremy on the wing. As it were.

Jaguar and Land Rover to consolidate dealerships

Jaguar and Land Rover are set to merge their sales facilities, according to Inside Line. Jaguar Land Rover North America President Andy Gross says 45 percent of Jaguar owners also have an SUV in their stable, so it makes sense to give customers as much exposure to the cat's high-riding cousins and possible. The number of overall outlets will remain the same, and the brands will reportedly remain separate on the showroom floor, however.

So far, just one dealer has made the move to combine under the roof of one 68,000 square-foot facility in Paramus, New Jersey (above), though a further 20 are ready to make the shift and become Jaguar Land Rover outlets. Gross believes the shift is necessary so that his company's dealer network will accurately reflect the company's products. We'll see how cozy the brands are when Jaguar starts rolling out its own SUVs in a few years.

J.D. Power: Mini, Lexus again offer most satisfying sales experience

JD Power has released its annual Sales Satisfaction Index Study, and once again Mini and Lexus have taken top honors. Overall, buyers are more satisfied with the auto-buying sales experience than they were last year, with those surveyed reporting an average score of 664 points on a 1,000-point scale. That's up from 648 in 2011. Dealer satisfaction also increased by five points over last year as well.

All told, Lexus brought home an index score of 737, which was high enough to put it atop the luxury brands for the second year in a row. JD Power says Infiniti came in second in that category with a score of 728 and Cadillac rounded out the podium with it's rating of 725. Speaking of Infiniti, that brand saw the single largest jump in sales satisfaction of any brand on the survey, popping up 52 index points over 2011.

Among mass-market brands, Mini ranked highest with a score of 712, followed closely by Buick with 706 and GMC farther down the line with 683. You can check out the full press release below for more information.

2013 Fiat 500e looks loud, runs quietly

2013 Fiat 500e

Somebody wanted it, so we all got it the Fiat 500e, the electric city car packed with enough Earth-saving tech that CEO Sergio Marchionne quipped (admittedly, early last year) that each one built will cost Fiat $10,000. The good news is that it not only comes with tons of EV-only gadgets and features, it does a good job, to our eye, of flaunting its electric looks and it offers the kinds of personalization one would expect of a hatch in the 500 family.

The multi-contrast exterior is grouped into three color packages, including an e-Sport Package that pairs mean with green. The Interior can be had in either Nero or Steam, both coming with Electric Orange accents, and a seven-inch TFT screen with all kinds of electric-car-status details.

Juice comes courtesy of a 111-horsepower electric-drive motor with 147 pound-feet of torque, using a battery rated at 24 kWh. Range is estimated at "more than 80 miles" on the 15-inch Firehawk GT low-rolling resistance tires, but Fiat says stories of "greater than 100 miles" aren't uncommon. With our high-res gallery above, you don't have to go that far to check it out from every angle.

BMW i3 Coupe Concept is the newest in LifeDrive "stream flow" design

BMW i3 Coupe Concept

This is the BMW i3 Coupe Concept, a sharpened take on all of the acronymous innovations wrought by four-door BMW i3 Concept: "stream flow" design wrapping its LifeDrive architecture and Life Module cabin. Presenting an evolved future beyond the already-futuristic four-door i3 Concept, the i3 Coupe Concept is a case of meticulous design and technological detail, hitting notes like anthracite-coloured kenaf fiber for the door support panels, three modes of sustainable driving and more advanced ways to calculate its route and range.

Its range is 100 miles, and for the BMW purists, the i3 Coupe Concept pushes its 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. It awaits your scrutiny in the high-res gallery above.

Renault planning a Tata Nano rival. Again.

renault

Four years ago, Renault confirmed that it would partner with India's Bajaj Auto to develop a rival to the Tata Nano. At the time, as everyone waited for the Tata Nano to arrive, you could have used a Richter scale to measure the tremors the executive suites of any automaker with an interest in the low end of emerging markets. Then the Nano, still the cheapest car in the world, didn't sell so well at the end of last year its sales were just six percent of its most conservative projections and everyone seemed content to let Tata spend the money to figure out if there really was a market for the cheapest car in the world.

Renault believes there is, kind of. Automotive News Europe reports that it will partner with Nissan to build two low-priced cars for emerging markets, one for 3,000 ($3,888 U.S.) and another for 5,000 ($6,400 U.S.). The price of the least expensive offering is nearly $1,400 more than a Nano, which costs $2,500, and that can't be considered a small sum in comparison. But one of the hindsight knocks on the Nano has been that even in emerging markets buyers don't want a car whose biggest lure is that it is cheap; they'd rather give their aspirations a bit more of a workout.

Renault's offerings are scheduled to hit the non-Western market in late 2014, which is coincidentally the same year that will see the return of the budget-minded and emerging-market-specific Datsun nameplate. They'll be built in Renault facilities in Chennai, India, with no mention made of Bajaj this time around.

2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition is a trail-eating off-road beast

2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition

Difficult as it may be, the reality of the matter is that there are a lot of vehicles in the United States that can make it through the daunting stretch of dirt, rocks and elevation changes that is the Rubicon Trail. That said, there isn't a single production vehicle available today that can navigate the off-road playground with as much aplomb as the Jeep Wrangler.

And no Jeep Wrangler rolling off the factory production line has ever been as off-road-ready as the 2013 Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition.

What makes this rugged machine so capable? It all starts with the steel front bumper that is ready to accept a winch and features removable end caps that allow the massive BF Goodrich 265/70R17 tires unimpeded access to the ground below and in front. In other words, this Wrangler can climb like a mountain goat.

Also included is a half-inch ride-height increase for additional clearance, electronic-locking front and rear Dana 44 axles with 4.10 ratios and locking differentials. Rounding out the package are a dual-intake Power Dome hood, red tow hooks, Mopar rock rails and the buyer's choice of Billet Silver, White or 10th Anniversary Edition-exclusive Anvil paint and red leather inside.

Check out our live images above, and feel free to peruse the press release below.

2013 VW Beetle Convertible debuts, priced from $24,495*

2013 VW Beetle Convertible - front three-quarter view, 60s edition, live in LA

With the second-generation modern-era Beetle, Volkswagen set out to redefine its iconic model, not just with a new shape, but also with a plan to reach a new, more balanced buying demographic. According to the German automaker, the new generation has done just that, with the 2012 model selling to male buyers to the tune of 40 percent 50 percent with the more powerful Turbo model. The previous-generation New Beetle finished out its long run with just 28-percent male ownership.

VW has just introduced its 2013 Beetle Convertible here at the LA Auto Show, and while it looks to be an excellent new addition to the family, we're not sure how well it will fare at further balancing the model's gender scales. No matter, we say sales are sales.

In addition to rolling out the new droptop Beetle, VW has released pricing, which starts from $24,495 for the price-leader 2.5-liter five-cylinder automatic model with 170 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the 2.0-liter Turbo (200 hp, 207 lb-ft) with a manual transmission and you're looking at $27,795 (a dual-clutch gearbox is optional). Or for a little more cash ($27,895) you can go the iconoclast's way and specify TDI diesel motivation (140 hp, 236 lb-ft). Pricing before a la carte options can reach $31,195 for the 2.0T with optional Fender sound and navigation packages. (*All pricing excludes a $795 destination fee).

For comparison's sake, a standard 2013 Beetle hatchback "Coupe" in VW parlance starts at $19,795. However, that model comes standard with a six-speed manual that isn't offered on the 2.5L Convertible the better comparison starts with the $20,895 2.5 automatic.

Regardless of which flavor Convertible is chosen, buyers will receive well-equipped models that include a standard one-touch power top, pyrotechnic rollover bars, heated V-Tex leatherette seats, alloy wheels, Bluetooth and iPod connectivity.

In an unusual move, VW has also chosen to launch new R-Line and Exclusive line model Beetle Convertibles in LA. We say "unusual" because while the racier looking R-Line and more upscale-looking Exclusive might in fact go some way toward courting the stronger male demographic the company is seeking, VW isn't going to sell them here they're European models. If the 2013 Convertible model takes off when it goes on sale in December, however, VW admits it may take a second look at expanding the Beetle's range even further...

Automotive News names its industry All-Stars

Automotive News has announced its annual list of Industry All-Stars. This year, the theme is apparently "success in the face of economic uncertainty," or something of that liking. The list points to executives who have led their respective brands and automakers to positive sales in spite of the European financial crisis and slowing sales in China. See the list below, and you'll understand why:
  • Industry Leader of the Year and CEO, Europe Martin Winterkorn, CEO, Volkswagen Group (above): The VW boss started with the German automaker in 2007, overseeing a staggering 12 brands. Under his leadership, sales of Volkswagens have gained in both China and America. VW has also expanded production to America and grown its operations in Brazil. Winterkorn is a very hands-on executive, traveling to America six times to test and tweak the American-built current-generation Passat. Volkswagen is aiming to be the largest and most profitable automaker in the wold by 2018, and Winterkorn will stay on through that time, making him accountable for those goals.
  • CEO, North America Sergio Marchionne, CEO, Chrysler Group: How does 31 straight months of positive year-over-year sales sound? The Fiat and Chrysler chief has bestowed dealers with a wealth of new product, and the American automaker is expected to post $1.5 billion in profits this year, in spite of economic turmoil in Europe.
  • CEO, Asia Takanobu Ito, President, Honda Motor Co.: In addition to leading the Japanese automaker through the aftermath and destruction of a tsunami, Takanobu Ito has overseen the revival of the NSX sportscar and the emergency facelift of the Honda Civic. He has also stated the company is looking to grow to six million in global sales in the next four years. Big plans, but he has also delivered up to this point.
  • US Exec, Asian Automaker Jim Lentz, CEO Toyota Motor Sales USA: Lentz has endured as Toyota's US boss through the 2010 unintended acceleration issue, and the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Through all of this, the Toyota Camry is still America's best-selling car, and profits are on the rise. Success in the face of crisis, indeed.
  • US Exec, European Automaker Jonathan Browning, CEO, Volkswagen Group of America: The 53-year-old Englishman came over to head up Volkswagen of America two years ago. Since then, VW sales have increased here at a rapid pace, and the brand has opened the Chattanooga plant to build the Passat. The plant is expected to expand to produce a mid-sized crossover (Tiguan perhaps?) for the US market.

2014 Chevrolet Spark EV makes first appearance in LA

While we still haven't learned how far it goes on a charge, Chevrolet offered the media a very close look at its upcoming 2014 Spark EV at an event the evening before the LA Auto Show rang its opening bell. Not only did we have a chance to look at the $32,500 ($25,000 after tax incentives) five-door urban mini car in its production-ready state, but the automaker brought a second Spark EV opened up like a sardine can so we could view its technical innards.

As we mentioned yesterday when the Spark EV was unveiled, the five-passenger pure-electric is fitted with a 20-plus kilowatt-hour battery pack driving the front wheels. Thanks to its 110 kW (130 horsepower) electric motor generating a whopping 400 pound-feet of torque, it scoots to 60 mph in less than eight seconds. Even better, Chevy is promising it will offer "among the best EV battery range in its segment" and the capability to accept SAE Combo DC Fast Charging (this means it is able to reach 80-percent battery charge in just 20 minutes).

Check out our live photo gallery to get a closer look at its mechanical layout and the location of its 560-pound battery pack.

2013 Fiat 500e finally ready to rock down to Electric Orange Avenue

For a car that Fiat didn't want to build, the company sure has a lot to say about it. The damn near mythical Fiat 500e is finally here, and a trip utilizing its 100-mile range would probably give you just enough time to finish reading the press releases that came with it.

Among the highlights are the color, Electrico Arancione Electric Orange to the Anglophones among you with contrasting white lower fascia, available only with the Bianca Perla (white) interior treatment. There are three exterior treatments, Nero (black), Bianca Perla and the eSport Package, that decide the color of the exterior accents (like the front fascia and mirrors) on the car's five available hues of Argento (silver), Grigio (gray), Bianca Perla and Nero, and that aforementioned Electric Orange that can only be had with Bianca Perla. The e-Sport Package gets the Nero interior and blacks-out the hatch in Nero trim work, black wheels and a "gradient-style" graphic along the door for "a high-voltage look."

The leatherette interior comes in two colors, either Nero or Steam, and gets Electric Orange accents. Electric-car touches include the seven-inch TFT screen in the dash that provides basic driving information as well as the status of the battery, range and general vehicle info.

The bodywork has been resculpted for less drag, the result being a 13-percent improvement in aerodynamics and a decrease in coefficient of drag from .36 to .31. It's been done through tweaks like the perforated (Fiat calls it "dot matrix") front fascia and side sills, resculpted mirror caps and rear spoiler, bellypans under the car and 15-inch wheels with flush faces.

That's to make easier work for the 111-horsepower electric-drive motor with 147 pound-feet of torque and its 24 kW, all so that it can provide the estimated range of "more than 80 miles" on the 15-inch Firehawk GT low-rolling resistance tires. Fiat says that city driving "typically" yields "greater than 100 miles." The rating is an "estimated 116 miles per gallon" and charging time on a 240-volt outlet is less than four hours. An iPhone and Android smartphone app keeps owners remotely notified of electric-car tidbits, and the TomTom navigation system can provide EV-friendly routes.

Settle in and check out absolutely all the details in the encyclopedic press release below, take a gander at it in the high-res gallery above, and stay tuned for our impression from the LA Auto Show floor.

2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition gets full frontal exposure

Being one of the more difficult off-road trails in the US and a test bed for Jeep products, the Rubicon Trail's name was first used on the Jeep Wrangler starting in 2003. Ten years later Jeep is celebrating the Wrangler Rubicon with a special package that makes it, "The most off-road capable Wrangler in history."

That's a pretty bold statement, but it definitely seems feasible after looking at some of the added equipment on the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition, such as a new winch-capable steel front bumper with removable end caps that allows full frontal exposure of the meatier BF Goodrich tires for better rock-crawling abilities. This new bumper alone allows the Wrangler to take on obstacles such as rocks or ruts practically head on, but the package also gives the Rubicon an extra half-inch lift and taller 265/70R17 tires.

Aside from its improved off-road prowess, the new model also has enough of a styling change to easily distinguish it from the standard Rubicon. For starters, the new front and rear bumpers and black-accented wheels give the Rubicon a beefed-up look, and a vented hood looks like it was sculpted by the same team responsible for the hood on the SRT Viper. The Anniversary Edition also gets plenty of plenty of color with red accents added to the front and rear tow hooks, shocks and a full red leather interior. The exterior will only be offered in three colors including an package-exclusive new blue-ish hue called Anvil, which is shown above. Mopar even gets in on the celebrations with finishing touches like black rocker panel rails, taillight guards and fuel door all coming standard.

The Rubicon 10th Anniversary Edition is available on both the two-door Wrangler and the four-door Wrangler Unlimited, and while pricing has yet to be determined, the commemorative model goes on sale in the spring of 2013. Scroll down for the full press release.

Toyota tops Kelley Blue Book's Resale Value Awards

Kelley Blue Book announced its annual Best Resale Value Award winners, and we weren't too surprised to see the list dominated by Japanese automakers mainly Toyota and Honda. KBB hands out the awards based on the projected residual value of mostly all 2013 model year vehicles, and Toyota skated home with a number of awards including 10 of the 22 overall categories and having five of its products in the top 10 for models with best resale value. KBB's Best Resale Value Awards were announced in the same week as the ALG Residual Value Awards, and there were many similarities between both lists, especially when it came to Toyota.

To come up with its winners, KBB measures depreciation over the first five years of ownership, and looks for the cars it expects to hold its value the best after this time; on average, the report says the 2013 model year vehicles will lose 61.8 percent of its value in five years. Of the 22 categories, 15 slots were filled by Toyota, Honda and Nissan products, while the Camaro and Porsche (Cayenne and Panamera) each took home a pair of awards. If Toyota has anything to be upset about in this list of cars, it's that categories for Hybrid/Alternative Energy Car and Electric Vehicle went to the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Volt, respectively.

The overall top 10 models for the best resale value in 2013 are, in alphabetical order:
  • Honda Civic
  • Honda CR-V
  • Jeep Wrangler
  • Lexus LX
  • Porsche Cayenne
  • Scion tC
  • Toyota FJ Cruiser
  • Toyota Land Cruiser
  • Toyota Tacoma
  • Toyota 4Runner
Scroll down to see KBB's press release that includes a breakdown of all individual category winners.

The story of Bring A Trailer, as told by Petrolicious

We've featured the cars of Bring a Trailer, and not so long ago Jay Leno's Garage added a car found on the classics-focused site. Four-wheeled filmmakers Petrolicious have gone behind the web page with a seven-minute piece on the co-founders of BringATrailer.com, Randy Nonnenberg and Gentry Underwood.

Both gentlemen get screen time, but it's Nonnenberg that tells the tale of how his early interest in vintage machinery turned into him becoming The Oracle among his friends when they wanted to buy. Eventually, Underwood's friend spoke up to say 'People want to read about what you know,' and a web site one of the finest time wasters in all the cyber world, we might add was born.

You can hear how it all began in the video below.

Chevy Spark EV unveiled, priced under $25K with tax incentives

The last veil has been lifted from the 2014 Chevy Spark EV, allowing us to finally view the Korean import in all its aero-optimized glory. While we aren't much surprised by its appearance the prototype in our First Drive wore only the thinnest of camo disguises we were a bit taken aback by the announced pricing.

Customers will need to scrounge up almost $25,000 to park GM's first purchasable (you could only lease its predecessor, the EV1) all-electric automobile in their driveways. That's just under $32,500 for those who don't qualify for the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Or, to put it another way, almost double the base price of the gasoline-powered version after the federal incentive.

In the context of other available electrics, that puts it well below the after-incentive $32,495 for the Ford Focus EV, but substantially higher than the $21,625 needed to bring home a Mitsubishi i. More importantly, it puts it dangerously close to the Nissan Leaf's current post-credit $27,700 pricetag, and perhaps even above the cost of the 2013 American-built model.

Luckily, GM isn't betting the farm with the Spark EV. With its US rollout expanded only slightly from California to include Oregon, the peppy little hatch should find enough buyers to suit its compliance purposes. And, like its plug-in Chevy Volt sister, the Spark shouldn't be seen as a means to an end in itself, but rather a starting point towards further electrification options for future models.

To get all the details except, oddly enough, the estimated range expected from its 20-plus kilowatt-hour battery pack check out the official press release below.

i3 Coupe Concept continues to evolve BMW's electric aspirations

BMW has unveiled the i3 Coupe Concept ahead of the 2012 LA Auto Show. Like the automaker's other i efforts, the i3 Coupe boasts a carbon fiber body, and an electric motor with a maximum output of 170 horsepower helps shuttle the two-door down the road. Believe it or not, the i3 Coupe Concept puts its 184 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. Engineers bolted an array of lithium-ion batteries under the floor to keep the vehicle's center of gravity as low as possible, and the carbon fiber reinforced plastic chassis gives the i3 Coupe Concept plenty of rigidity.

Technically, the new electric concept rides on the same wheelbase as the standard i3, but boast a wider, lower look. BMW says aesthetic tweaks like the raked windshield and gently sloping rear deck are set to become hallmarks of the i3 family.

Inside, the i3 Coupe Concept comes packed with a slew of sustainable materials, including leather, wood and wool, and thanks to the vehicle's packaging, the passenger cabin features an uninterrupted space between the driver and passenger footwell. Likewise, with no transmission tunnel, the cabin appears more open and airy. Check out the full press release below for more information.

Acura, Honda, Toyota dominate ALG Residual Value awards

Drive a new car off the lot and, boom, it's used and not worth nearly what you own on it. But to help buyers counter this to the best of their abilities, ALG has released its 14th annual list of best bets for retained value.

Toyota stands out from the crowd with nine total awards on the list, including its Scion and Lexus brands. But Honda took the top spot among mainstream brands with Hyundai second and Scion third. Subaru is fourth and Mazda fifth. In the premium brand rankings, Acura is ranked Number One, while Infiniti and Audi bring up second and third. In fourth place is Lexus and in fifth, Mercedes-Benz. Chevrolet is listed as number fifteen last place on the mainstream list, while Lincoln is at the bottom of premium brands in tenth position.

"Hyundai's ascent as a brand is nothing short of impressive," said Larry Dominique, president of ALG in a press release. "Since 2007, when the brand ranked in the bottom quartile for residual value, Hyundai has delivered well-executed product, and has kept incentives and fleet two elements that can quickly damage residual value in check. And, as demonstrated by the redesigned Santa Fe Sport, they continue to deliver."

ALG also looked at residual values within specific segments. Among sub compact cars, the Honda Fit retains the most residual value on average. Honda Accord (pictured) was tops in midsize cars and the Odyssey among minivans. Compact car goes to Hyundai's Elantra and fullsize car to that company's Azera. The Koreans also excelled with the Santa Fe Sport in the midsize utility vehicle category.

Toyota products show up nine times in the segments with the Prius C taking alt-fuel vehicle, Scion FR-S in sports car, the FJ Cruiser among compact utility vehicles and Sequoia best among full size utilities. Toyotas beat out the domestics in pickup trucks, too, with the Tacoma taking midsize category and Tundra the full size division. The Land Cruiser kept the most residual value when compared to other premium full size utility vehicles and premium cars from Lexus took the full size (GS 350) and executive (LS 460) categories.

Nissan prices the 2013 Versa, Cube and Armada

Nissan Versa

Nissan has revealed prices for three of its 2013 offerings: the Versa, Cube and Armada. There are no exterior revisions for any beyond paint choices, but all get new combinations in packaging and tech along with minor price increases.

The Versa goes up in price by $1,000. The base, five-speed manual Versa S rings up at $11,990 before the $790 destination and handling charge. Even at that price, the Versa remains the least expensive new car in America to buy. A 1.6 S AT with a four-speed automatic joins the lineup on top of the five-speed and the Xtronic CVT, bringing 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway to the mix. A new S Plus trim gets cruise control and two more rear speakers.

Aero enhancements like low-rolling resistance tires, an air intake guide, rear spoiler and rear wheel and underbody air deflectors mean that every CVT Versa gets 40 highway mpg, up from 38 mpg in 2012. The Versa line maxes out at $16,590 for the 1.6 SL CVT.

The 2013 Cube goes up by $180, now starting at $16,760 before $790 for destination and handling. For 2013, Nissan axes the base 1.8 model, leaving just S and SL trims. Transmission choices remain a six-speed manual or CVT.

The 2013 Armada's price rises by $840 to $40,710 before the $995 destination fee. A new Platinum Reserve Package makes the priciest Armada sticker at $56,180. It includes 20-inch dark chrome wheels, dark chrome grille and outside mirrors, two-tone Chocolate/Almond leather seating, and dark satin chrome interior accents. For the back-seaters, the single eight-inch screen for the DVD system becomes two seven-inch, headrest-mounted screens.

The press releases below have more details on each of the new offerings.

CTS sales nosediving thanks to new ATS, so GM will cut output

Cadillac CTS - front three-quarter view, silver

Cadillac designed the compact ATS to compete with the BMW 3 Series, but GM says the new Caddy is also cutting into CTS sales. Edmunds.com backs that up with data showing potential buyers are cross-shopping the ATS with the CTS as well as the BMW.

Automotive News spoke to the head of Cadillac sales, Chase Hawkins, who admits The General expected the ATS to cannibalize sales of the CTS. But Hawkins says a plan is in place to deal with the drop in CTS sales: make fewer of them.

"We've planned for ATS to take some CTS customers out of the market who we otherwise would have seen," Hawkins tells AN. "We definitely are going to be producing fewer CTSes next year to create some of that space for ATS."

The next-generation CTS is expected to be larger and costlier, which should better separate the two stablemates in the marketplace. As the two models find their own niches, AN speculates a few more import buyers to come back to the iconic American brand.

2014 Chevrolet Impala priced from $27,535*

2014 Chevrolet Impala live on auto show stand - front three-quarter view

Something to be thankful for this holiday weekend? A price for the 2014 Chevrolet Impala, which will sticker from $27,535 (*inclusive of an $810 destination charge). The latest headline-grabber on the Epsilon II platform, the coming Impala which will go on sale in Spring 2013 can be had with either a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 195 horsepower and 187 pound-feet of torque or a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 hp and 264 lb-ft. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 182 hp and eAssist light hybrid technology will come soon thereafter, with all powerplants yoked to a six-speed automatic.

The $27,535 base price gets the 2.5-liter in LS trim. It will take another $2,250 to get up to an LT, and then another $4,770 for the top-flight LTZ that runs $34,555. You'll have to wait for that LS model, though, because the 3.6-liter will be the first one to market. Not available in LS trim, the 3.6-liter will command $30,760 in LT spec and $36,580 in LTZ trim.

The conclusion of the most simplistic comparison with the $26,685 2013 Impala is that the sedan's base price has gone up by $850. However, the 2014 Impala is completely new and the base version gets a smaller, less-powerful engine. It's possible that performance figures could be similar even with the price-leader model if tuning and weight are improved, but we'll have to see, as Chevrolet hasn't released any figures yet.

For the moment, a better comparison could be the 3.0-liter LT trims, the 2014 model representing a $2,550 increase over the long-serving outgoing car, albeit with more available features like MyLink with natural voice recognition, ten airbags, adaptive cruise control, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Side Blind Zone Alert.

There's a bit more info in the press release below about the Oshawa, Ontario and Hamtramck, Michigan-built model range, but not prices for the 2.4-liter eAssist those will be announced later.

Shelby American to keep going, promises new models for Detroit, Chicago and NY shows

In May, the automotive world was saddened by the passing of racing icon Carroll Shelby. Following that sad event, it did not take long for attention to quickly turn to the future of the performance brand. Given the significance of Shelby American in the aftermarket and performance worlds, that makes some sense.

According to Autoweek, business partner John Luft was told by Carroll, to "Keep Shelby American alive," in his waning hours. Following his late chief's request, Shelby American is set to roll out new products at the North American International Auto Show in January, as well as the Chicago and New York shows. So we know product is on the way, but what can we expect?

The report was foggy on details, but claimed the Las Vegas-based performance outfit would look towards the Ford EcoBoost family of engines, and to wringing more power from smaller displacement. Shelby has already taken advantage of forced induction with smaller engines, in the form of the 475-horsepower supercharged V6 in the Shelby GTS. The GTS is considered an entry-level Shelby, with a $35,000 price tag, making it accessible to more enthusiasts.

Also part of the plan will be the continued relationship with some 2,300 Ford dealers, through which Shelby American markets parts. Both Roush and SVT compete for this business.

Meanwhile Jim Farley, global VP of marketing at Ford, issued a statement that Shelby, "will continue to influence Ford performance cars for many years to come." While that may not be a confirmation of future product, all of these efforts point to a brand that is positioned to live on long after Carroll Shelby's passing.

Saab owner may speed up relaunch with gas-powered 9-3

Saab 9-3

National Electric Vehicle Sweden, the new owner of Saab, has good news for you if you happened to miss out on picking up a 9-3 before the company plummeted through bankruptcy. Automotive News Europe reports NEVS may offer a gasoline-powered 9-3 in 2013. That move would effectively step up the brand's re-launch plan by a full year. Originally, the company planned to introduce an electric vehicle in 2014, but NEVS is currently investigating ways to start production next summer using "a 9-3 with a traditional powertrain" in order to generate more cash for the electrification effort.

NEVS purchased Saab earlier this year with the intent of resurrecting the brand with a fully electric product portfolio. The new EVs would theoretically ride on the Saab Phoenix platform and be manufactured at the automaker's plant in Trollhattan, Sweden. The report of a resurrected gasoline model came courtesy of Mikael Oestlund, a company spokesperson familiar with the company's workings.

Women outnumber men for first time on US roads

Oprah Drivers

According to a study by the University of Michigan, women now outnumber men on US roads for the first time in the country's history. Analysts at the school's Transportation Research Institute used data from driver's license statistics for their findings, and the trend may have a widespread impact on the automotive industry as a whole. The researchers predict that if the trend continues, it could affect everything from vehicle design to traffic fatalities and fuel consumption. The study concludes that women are more likely than men to purchase vehicles that are smaller, safer and more fuel efficient, and that they drive less over all than their male counterparts.

The study looked at trends in driver's licenses over the 15 year period between 1995 and 2010. Over that time, the number of men between the ages of 25 and 29 years old with licenses dropped by 10 percent, while the number of women in the same age bracket fell by only 4.7 percent. In 2010, 105.7 million women could legally drive, while only 104.3 million men could say the same. Contrast that with the 1950s, when around half of adult women could operate a motor vehicle.

2013 Ford Fusion Energi to start at $39,495

Ford Fusion Energi

Car and Driver reports the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi will carry an entry price tag of $39,495 before a $4,000 federal tax credit. That chunk of coin will land you behind the wheel of an SE trim plug-in hybrid, though if you feel like spending a few more pennies, the Fusion Energi Titanium can be had for $40,995. Those both offer a combined driveline output of around 188 horsepower and an all-electric range of around 20 miles depending on driving habits and ambient temperature.

Still, Ford may have a hard time convincing buyers to spend their money on the Energi when the (albeit smaller) Chevrolet Volt lands at $39,145, plus destination, and offers 40 miles of all-electric range. Throw in the fact that the Fusion Hybrid comes in a full $11,500 cheaper than its plug-in sister, and the argument for the Fusion Energi becomes even thinner.

Tesla Model S will get price increase

Tesla has confirmed the Model S will soon see a price increase. The company has yet to release details on how much more the critically acclaimed electric vehicle will cost moving forward, but has released a few details about how the shift will affect buyers with existing reservations. Tesla says the increase will not apply to anyone who has a reservation so long as they configure and finalize their order "within a fair and predefined timeframe." Likewise, those buyers who deferred their reservations will be able to keep the original pricing by finalizing their order within the same timeframe.

Tesla says the price shift will also include changes to the Model S option package structure, and that some features currently considered standard equipment will become added cost options in the future. As with the overall price increase, these changes will not impact those with current orders, reservations or deferred reservations. Expect to hear more about the price increase as information becomes available, and in the meantime you can read the brief press release below for more information.

Japanese automakers ramping production for renewed American sales

The 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan took quite the toll on the automotive industry in that nation. Not content to lean on that tragedy as excuse for slagging sales, the Japanese automakers are planning on a major production expansion in North America. The aim is to reclaim the market share lost from the Tsunami-based dip, and overcome a dollar/yen exchange rate that makes exporting to America unprofitable.

Following the Tsunami, Japanese automakers ramped up production in their North American facilities to compensate, but according to Automotive News, Nissan, Honda and others have all reported plans for still-further increased production in the year ahead. As part of this ramp-up, Mazda will open a facility in Salamnca, Mexico before March of 2014. Part of that increase in output is 50,000 units of a Toyota-badged compact car, which Mazda will produce.

Other Mexican production facilities opening include a Honda plant, which will open in Spring 2014 in Celaya, and a Nissan plant, set to open later this year in Aguascalientes. Nissan also said that it will need another plant in North America within the next five years. According to Nissan Boss Carlos Ghosn, the company aims to raise its stake in the US market from 8 percent to 10, and adding production will help achieve that goal. Even Mitsubishi is aiming to boost production at its Normal, Illinois plant. Production of the Outlander Sport is currently at 50,000, which Mitsubishi wants to raise to 70,000.

All of these moves come in reaction to growing demand for Japanese cars, as well as the yen's growing value versus the American dollar. Such a disparity hurts Japanese automakers' ability to make a profit from exporting vehicles. As a result, moving production to the US and Mexico have become the best viable option.

Brutus motorcycle is half an ATV

Take an old three-wheeler and lop off one of those big balloon tires in the back and you've got the basic concept of the Brutus (not to be confused with the electric-powered, US-built Brutus). But there's more to this bad bike than bloated, knobby tires.

Designed by Alessandro Tartarini, son of the founder of Italian motorcycle-maker Italjet, the Brutus is powered by a 750cc, single cylinder, 4-stroke with claimed output of 45 horsepower. It's coupled to a CVT with optional reverse and low gears. Those components are mounted to a beefy high-strentgh steel chassis riding on 14-inch aluminum wheels. Those tires are Maxxis Bighorn ATV tires, designed to tackle sand, dirt and rocks. The front tire is 6-inches wide and the rear 7.5-inches. Despite the aggressive tread front and back, the bike is rear-wheel drive only (unlike the much older Rokon, which is similar in appearance and two-wheel-drive).

The bike is expected on the market in early 2013 and may offer an optional sidecar and snow treads, a photo of which is in our gallery.

CarMD releases entirely objective reliability rankings

Reliability ratings for cars are important stats for customers to have when looking at buying a new or used car, but can vary greatly depending on the source. While Consumer Reports uses customer feedback that can be somewhat subjective but encompassing of the entire car (including elements not necessarily involved with reliability), CarMD can more objectively (in theory) measure a car's reliability with its Vehicle Health Index. The index uses data based on problems associated with check engine codes, as well as the average costs to repair these problems.

In just the second year of its study, CarMD found that Toyota (including Scion and Lexus) has once again held its ground as the most reliable automaker having the fewest issues that would set a check engine light. Likewise, Hyundai stays at the runner up spot. BMW sits in the third spot after not being named to the list at all last year. Honda and Volkswagen round out the top five. In terms of cost to repair, it isn't that surprising that BMW has the most expensive repair costs at an average of $502.48, but we were definitely surprised to see Toyota listed in the two spot with average repairs of $490.72. American automakers General Motors and Ford dropped out of the top five to the eight and nine spots, respectively.

Overall, the most reliable car on the list is the 2010 Toyota Corolla just barely ahead of the 2008 Ford Taurus and the 2008 Toyota Yaris. Of the top 100 cars, 16 of them were Toyotas with Ford following close behind with 15 cars on the list. Ford did take the top spot when it in the truck category and Subaru was named the best in the wagon and crossover SUV category. The study even breaks down the top five causes for a check engine light by automaker.

Scroll down for the official press release, and be sure to check out the full CarMD reliability study.

Ford of Europe denied small coupe, Mustang viability questioned

Ford of Europe's Puma Racing hatchback - front three-quarter view, blue

Too often, we find ourselves pining for Europe-only versions of cars that will never be sold in the United States, but if a report from Inside Line is to be believed, this is a case in which The Continent's enthusiasts will have to watch from afar gets. Ford of Europe is seeking a new coupe that would be smaller than the Mustang, but be positioned as a halo car for the American automaker's European division.

Ford president and CEO Alan Mulally has reportedly given this proposal the 'thumbs down' for the time being, citing the current economic turmoil in the European market. Given the financial climate, the presumably lower-volume vehicle was deemed too much of a risk in these uncertain times. While there was reportedly a design on the works, based on an undisclosed global Ford platform, these efforts have since been shelved following word from the Ford boss.

For its part, the next-generation Ford Mustang is being designed as a global vehicle, opening up potential for sales in new markets. However, despite announcing that the next-generation Mustang will be headed for Europe back in September, Inside Line says Ford of Europe officials are still apparently concerned that the Mustang will be too large and thirsty for their market. The thought is that a more fitting performance model would be smaller, with a potent yet fuel-efficient engine paired with the responsive handling of Ford's current European lineup (perhaps something like Ford's short-lived Puma, shown above).

If/when economic conditions improve in Europe, it will be interesting to see if Ford restarts talks about bringing a new smaller sportscar to market. While we would not disapprove, it would once again cause us consternation if the model was then kept as a Europe-only offering.

Will Hyundai's MPG malfunction give ground to Honda?

Hyundai sign with shadowy figure

One man's loss is another man's gain. The same notion can be applied to the automotive marketplace, where bad press for one brand presents an opportune time to capitalize for another. A new Bloomberg puts forth a potential automotive example of this fallout stemming from the recent Hyundai and Kia fuel economy debacle. The Korean automakers were recently marred for incorrectly calculating their fuel economy data, resulting in the downward adjustment of the fuel economy figures for many of their most popular models.

While this represents a setback for Kia and Hyundai, brands like Toyota and Honda are looking to gain ground on the two Korean marques, which have been catching up to Japan's volume automakers thanks to their radically improved lineups.

In 2010, Hyundai began touting its lineup as the most fuel-efficient in America. This stirred emotions at Honda, a brand that had been the nation's top performer in fuel economy for 33 years. With this recent adjustment by Hyundai, Honda is evidently hoping to wear the fuel efficiency crown once again.

According to the report, the Korean automakers' errors came in the EPA's "coastdown" test, in which a test car is driven to 80 mph, put in neutral and "coasted" to 9 mph. Hyundai admits this part of the test was not performed correctly. According to Sung Hwan Cho, president of Hyundai's US technical center, "These were just honest procedure errors in a very complex testing process."

Adding to Honda's opportunity is the recently previewed 2013 Honda Civic, set to go on sale the same day it is revealed at this month's LA Motor Show. The 2012 model came in for harsh criticism from the automotive press, though the model's sales proved largely unaffected by the controversy. Industry analysts suggest that Honda's new (and presumably improved) 2013 Civic should put the automaker in prime position to reclaim both consumer mindshare and the industry's MPG crown.

Thought Renault's Twizy couldn't get more French? Here's one covered in macarons

Renault Twizy covered in macarons

While we were in Las Vegas covering the 2012 SEMA Show, sweeter teeth had converged upon France's capital city for the annual Salon du Chocolat, otherwise known as the Paris Chocolate Show. Renault brought a little automotive flair to the this year's show by teaming with French pastry chef Pierre Herm to create a Renault Twizy covered with macarons.

In a two-day process, 1,700 of the Oreo-like pastries-weighing around 50 pounds in total-were individually glued onto the high-calorie show car's bodywork and wheel covers.

Scroll down to watch how this tasty Twizy was created.

Honda yanks sheet off 2013 Crosstour, adds lower base price [w/video]

2013 Honda Crosstour

The Honda Crosstour has been something of an automotive whatcha-ma-call-it. Buyers have found it hard to identify what the high-riding wagon is all about, and so have we. Honda even started out by calling it the Accord Crosstour, and then changed its name to help give it more of its own identity. But with other popular crossovers already in Honda's stables, trying to carve out a niche for the Crosstour has been no easy task.

To help strengthen the identity of the crossover-wagon, Honda has updated the Crosstour with more "refined styling," a number of content improvements and a lower base price. The first thing you will notice is the more utilitarian, "rugged" styling, with a pronounced front clip, fender flares and side skirts.

Under the hood lies one of Honda's new Earth Dreams family of engines. The base 2.4-liter inline-four makes 192 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while returning 22 miles per gallon city and 31 miles per gallon highway. The available 3.5-liter V6 produces 278 horsepower, up seven from the outgoing V6, making it the most powerful engine in the Earth Dreams family. The V6 returns 20/29 for front-wheel-drive models, and 18/28 for V6 models equipped with Real Time 4WD.

The Crosstour is also available with a suite of safety technologies, including a backup camera, forward collision warning and lane departure warning. A set of less-technical safety improvements have been applied as well, including reshaped headrests for improved visibility and an expanded view driver's mirror.

The 2013 Honda Crosstour comes with a $27,230 base price $525 less than the outgoing model and goes on sale November 30, 2012. Only time will tell if these changes are effective enough to sway more buyers, but if you may be interested, check out the press release and video below.

Mercedes-Benz Ener-G-Force concept is a G-Class for the future

Looking to create an entrant for this year's LA Design Challenge, Mercedes-Benz came up with the Ener-G-Force to fit the theme of Highway Patrol Vehicle 2025. Mercedes-Benz says that the styling of the Ener-G-Force builds on many cues from the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, and like the original G-Wagen introduced in 1979 as a civilian version of a military vehicle, it didn't take much imagination to envision a civilian version of the Ener-G-Force. Of course, it wouldn't be a futuristic concept vehicle without some sort of advanced powertrain, and the concept unveiled today delivers on this front as well.

From a design standpoint, the Ener-G-Force infuses many elements seen on the G-Class but with a much more modern interpretation giving it a new, yet recognizable appearance. These cues include the sunk-in headlights, turn signals/running lights mounted atop the front fenders, the long, flat roofline and the low, rectangular taillights, but the Ener-G-Force ditches the G-Class' boxy lines in favor of a more rounded shape.

One of the interesting elements of the concept is the roof rack. While it looks like a cargo rack that could be used for a safari, it is actually a way for the vehicle to collect water to store in tanks to then be transferred to a converter that creates hydrogen to power the fuel cells. The batteries for this system are built into the rocker panels, and the hypothetical range for this conceptual system is 500 miles of zero-emission driving. For off-roading purposes, the system uses four independent motors at each wheel and a roof-mounted scanner that adjusts the suspension to best fit the road conditions and terrain.

The Ener-G-Force was one of six entrants for the 2012 LA Design Challenge, and the winning design will be announced on November 29 as a part of the LA Auto Show. Scroll down to read more about the Ener-G-Force in a press release from Mercedes-Benz.

Fiat releases first 500e images ahead of LA spotlight

2013 Fiat 500e - front three-quarter view

Fiat won't officially pull the wraps off of its all-electric 500e until the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month, but we now have a pair of official images that show the little orange shocker both inside and out.

All of the details surrounding the new 500e are still under embargo until the debut, and as of this writing, Chrysler will only confirm that the car will go on sale in California sometime in 2013. The automaker will also show the car this weekend at the American Music Awards on the "green carpet" this Sunday, November 18.

Fiat 500e interiorFrom what we can see in these photos, the 500e doesn't look vastly different from other Fiat 500 models, save the redesigned lower front fascia (in contrasting white), lower side sills, aero underbody lip, and more wind-friendly wheels presumably wrapped in low rolling-resistance tires. Inside, the Fiat's cabin has been done up in a similar white-and-orange motif. Other changes to the interior include a redesigned gauge cluster and the addition of push-buttons where the normal gear shifter would be.

There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the 500e leading up to its launch, including reports stating that Chrysler is only making the car to appease the folks of California and that the company will lose something in the area of $10,000 on each EV it builds. We'll see how the little electron-eater fares when it launches next year.

Until then, sight tight we'll have the full skinny on the 500e in the coming weeks. For now, scroll down to read Chrysler's very brief statement.

Redesigns that worked and flopped determined by new Cars.com index

The 2013 Ford Fusion is probably the latest, greatest example of a completely redesigned car that has evoked widespread calls of "Look at that!" Above its buzzworthy looks, though, Ford will be concerned about how the 2013 Fusion sells and by how much if at all it beats sales of the previous version. Cars.com has run the sales numbers on 61 models that have been redesigned in the past four years, ranking them as Winners, Underperformers and Losers depending on how a new-generation model is selling compared to the one it replaces.

The rankings are sorted by sales class small, medium and large sellers so that the success of a niche sports car is weighted differently than the success of a popular midsize car. Compared to a four-year sales average for redesigned cars in each class, Winners were those who outsold the average, Underperformers didn't make the average but did outperform the previous year's (hence, the previous car's) sales, while Losers couldn't do any better anywhere.

Among the most recently introduced winners were the Toyota Camry and the Honda CR-V. The Camry beat the Four-Year Category Average Redesign Increase for large sellers by 2.2 percent, the CR-V managed 0.2 percent. Underperformers included the Audi A6/S6 which, even though it has outsold the previous generation by 58 percent, still isn't getting near the small seller category average of 79.2 percent. The new Hyundai Accent is also considered an underperformer, the new model boosting sales by 5.5 percent nowhere near the 61.5 percent of the medium seller category average. The only Loser listed in the chart is the Honda Civic, taking one last thrashing before the "honed" 2013 redesign gets a chance to right the ship.

As for that Fusion, the 2013 model has strong numbers to follow: the 2010 Fusion was a huge winner, putting up a 55.1-percent increase in the large seller category, beating the average by 33 percent. It only trailed the redesigned 2011 Hyundai Sonata shown above, which pasted the average by 42.5 percent. You can find a few more of the ranked models in Cars.com's chart by heading over to their website.

Suzuki Samurai lives on with new Jimny facelift

The Suzuki Jimny is "sold across 188 global markets," but one of them isn't ours. For UK buyers who can buy a Jimny in SZ3 or SZ4 trims, the 2013 model has just been introduced with tweaks peppered throughout the vehicle. Four Wheeler crowns Ultimate Factory 4x4... who wins?

Ultimate Factory 4x4

Nearly every automaker doing business in the SUV or pickup truck segments offers a package designed to improve the off-road capabilities of its wares. But, of course, not all such factory kits are created equal. How, then, to separate the wheat from the chaff? Gather each of them up and put them through their paces, naturally.

The folks from Four Wheeler and PickupTrucks.com joined forces to run just such a comparison test, with the winner named the Ultimate Factory 4x4. A total of seven vehicles showed up to the fight: the 2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, 2012 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X and Xterra PRO-4X, 2012 Ram Power Wagon, and 2012 Toyota 4Runner Trail and Tacoma TRD TX Baja Series.

With the contestants in place, the whole crew put each vehicle through a battery of tests that included skidpad and acceleration measurements, a hillclimb, a rocky stairstep course and a rock garden. Considering the nature of the beasts, on-road ride and comfort were not part of the routine.

So, which four-wheeler ended up on top? Click here to read the results, and don't act like you're surprised by the victor.

Consumer Reports weighs in with its first Tesla Model S review

Everyone has been chiming in with their thoughts on the Tesla Model S lately, and with the car taking home awards like the prestigious Motor Trend Car of the Year, this probably won't change anytime soon. Not wanting to be left in the dark, Consumer Reports has managed to get its hands on a Model S to give its own impressions of the luxurious electric hatchback.

Like many other outlets (including our own first drive), CR praised the Model S for its styling (which it compares to an Audi A7) and performance (which it says "can put serious hurt on a Corvette"). With limited time with the car, the video doesn't touch on the specific range the institute attained, but it appears most of the car's time was spent on the track anyway.

On the flip side of things, CR dinged the Model S for its retractable door handles which the reviewer refers to as "fussy," and as much as CR has blasted Ford and its MyFord Touch for being distracting and largely button-less in the past, we were surprised at how much it seemed to adore the lack of buttons on Model S. They even glossed over the fact that drivers can surf the Web on the 17-inch touch screen while driving.

Scroll down to watch the first drive video and then head over to Consumer Reports for the write-up.

Supra successor may be all-electric sourced from Tesla; MR2 returning too?

Toyota FT-HS concept car - front three-quarter view

Rumors of a revival of the Toyota Supra and MR2 have been swirling for years right up until just this week when high-level Toyota employees all but confirmed their return.

But now The Detroit Bureau has put together news from different sources suggesting that the next Supra might be all electric. The report cites recent comments from Toyota senior executives hinting at plans to work with Tesla on a new joint project. The FT-HS Concept (shown above) seems a logical inspiration for a new Supra.

And on the other side of the equation is Tesla's design chief Franz von Holzhausen who was quoted last year saying his company was looking at its next project, probably a sports car, that would follow next year's intro of the Model X. He went on to suggest the car would compete directly with BMW's 3 Series, which, in coupe form, could be a worthy competitor to a Supra as well.

Such a sporty, up-market car could easily take advantage of the Model S platform while the electric drivetrain would fit with what Toyota's chief engineer Tetsuya Tada says is an effort to balance a green image with products that offer "driving fun."

Last week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company was already working on "a few other variants of the Model S" that would be "pretty exciting."

Toyota's Tada says there's no target date for introduction of either a Supra or MR2, but he would expect development to take up to five years to engineer the pair and for the Supra to take priority over the MR2.

Production Chevrolet Spark EV to debut in LA

Chevrolet Spark EV teaser

It's been a little over a year since General Motors first told us that an all-electric version of the Chevrolet Spark would be heading to the United States. And now, The General has confirmed that the little EV will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later this month.

Chevrolet isn't spilling any details on the Spark EV just yet, only stating that the vehicle "will offer consumers the same package that has made the gasoline-powered model so popular while delivering the technology and performance of pure electric power." Not much to talk about there, and the only bits of information divulged previously are that the Spark EV will be sold in "limited quantities in select US and global markets" and that the nanophosphate lithium-ion battery packs will be supplied by A123 Systems.

In other LA Auto Show news, GM will be showing off an updated version of the Chevrolet MyLink system that will debut in the 2014 Impala. The refreshed system offers higher levels of personalization and improved smartphone integration. Scroll down for all the details.
