VWerks Ram KTS is a Ram Runner aftermarket-style

VWerks Ram KTS

Chrysler first introduced us to its Ram Runner exactly two years ago at SEMA, but for buyers of this Raptor-like truck who don't want to go through dealerships for the upgrades, VWerks has just the thing. Looking every bit as mean as the dealer-built Ram Runner, the VWerks Ram KTS gets a wide-body treatment and upgraded off-road performance suspension similar to its Mopar contemporary.

Starting life as your everyday Ram 1500, the Ram KTS on display at SEMA features a beefed-up KORE long-travel suspension system and off-road tires that allows the truck to tackle tough terrain at high speeds. From there, VWerks also added wider front and rear fenders, matte black 17-inch wheels and a Flowmaster performance cat-back exhaust system. For buyers looking for the rough and rugged look of the KTS but not needing the high-speed, off-road abilities, VWerks also offers the Baja Series kit that replaces the performance suspension system with a set of 20-inch wheels.

The VWerks Ram KTS and Ram Baja Series kits are available on any 2009 through 2013 model year Ram 1500, but there is no word on pricing for either kit yet. Scroll down for more information about both kits, and check out the KTS in our live gallery above.

Legacy Power Wagon Conversion is three tons of vintage American iron

Legacy Power Wagon Conversion

There's a soft spot in our hearts for well-done resuscitation of vintage off-road iron. Perhaps the most notable company performing such restomod work is Icon 4x4, but the Californian outfit isn't the only company turning its attention to the down-and-dirty side of the vintage scene.

Legacy Classic Trucks in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is using the 2012 SEMA Show to display the Legacy Power Wagon. As its name implies, the truck started life many, many years ago as a Dodge Power Wagon (built between 1945 and 1980 not to be confused with the current version), itself based on an older military design. In stock form, the Power Wagon was much loved for its stalwart ability to carry people and products over just about any terrain.

In the form you see above, the massively capable Power Wagon looks beefy enough to pull a freight train uphill through a snow storm... or something like that. As seen above, the Legacy Power Wagon would set back its buyer some $180,000. In base configuration, the truck runs $114,950. That's a huge sum, no doubt, but we're sure a few well-heeled buyers won't mind.

If nothing else, the Legacy Power Wagon Conversion is equipped with top-shelf componentry. The buyer can choose from either a 426-cubic-inch V8 with 425 horsepower from the Mopar parts book or a 3.9-liter Cummins turbo diesel four cylinder mill pounding out 480 pound-feet of torque. A range of transmission options are available, up to the stout Allison unit of the show truck.

All the specifications and options can be seen here, and we invite you to gaze at our high-res image gallery above.

Hurricane Sandy destroys 16 Fisker Karmas at port with water and fire

Even before Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the US, there was no doubt the storm would wreak havoc for automakers (especially luxury brands) in the Northeast, but it looks like Fisker may have taken the biggest, most spectacular hit.

According to Jalopnik, 16 Fisker Karma models waiting to be shipped off to dealers at Port Newark were flooded during the storm surge, and while it isn't clear how it happened, some of the cars ended up catching on fire.

This isn't the first (or second) time a Fisker Karma has caught fire, but it is a different scenario that led to the fires. While the first two instances may have been related to a hot engine compartment, the storm-damaged Karmas were sitting in a lot full of other cars when they were flooded with sea water. Since none of the vehicles were being charged and it's unlikely that any had recently been driven, the best guess of a cause for these fires is some sort of short caused by the batteries coming in contact with salt water.

Fisker has released an official statement about the fires (read it below) saying the company will investigate the situation, but as of yet, there is no additional information.

Why Buick's Encore wasn't a Chevy

Buick is taking a gamble with its 2013 Encore. General Motors' near-luxury brand has enjoyed great success attracting conquest buyers to its larger Enclave crossover, but it has never offered something quite like this small CUV.

Very early signs suggest that the gamble might be working. According to Mark Reuss, President of General Motors, the automaker expected about 1,500 initial orders from its dealers for the Encore, but it's tracking closer to 9,000 units. Alluding to the fact that historically, Buick has shared similar products with GM's other brands, Reuss says that Buick dealers are "thrilled to have an exclusive." The automaker already markets almost identical models in other markets as the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka and Chevrolet Trax, but The General's other brands won't offer a twin to the new baby Buick.

The new Encore is based on the Gamma architecture that underpins the Chevrolet Sonic, and it shares the economy car's available turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine. With standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive, GM says its Encore will be pitted against competitors like the BMW X1 and Audi Q3, both of which are much more expensive but also much more powerful.

Some industry watchers including members of Autoblog have openly wondered whether the Encore is a good fit for Buick, as GM has been steadily working to turn the brand into a more premium marque to tackle the likes of Acura and Lexus. Those same pundits have suggested that the Encore's small size and limited power would perhaps play better under the Chevrolet banner, especially as there would appear to be enough white space below Bowtie's very popular Equinox CUV. Autoblog approached Reuss with this notion at a media roundtable today, and the executive bristled, stating categorically that the Trax "would have never worked" in North America because of financial and packaging reasons, not to mention the fact that the model doesn't wear Chevrolet's new design language (as seen in the 2014 Impala).

Certainly, GM will be able to ask more money for the Encore with a Buick Tri-Shield badge on its nose than it would with a Chevrolet emblem the range will start at $24,950 when it launches in the first quarter of 2013 and strong early orders suggest that the automaker may indeed have the last laugh.

Why Hurricane Sandy fallout will hit luxury carmakers particularly hard

When we say the worst of Hurricane Sandy has passed, we're only talking about the weather phenomena; the depth of the storm's other impacts will take time to measure. Many of the estimated 4,751 car dealers in the states affected by Sandy spent the run-up to the storm moving their inventory to high ground if possible and bracing their dealerships for the storm. Many had already been through Hurricane Irene had some practice, but, as one dealer said, the water levels before Sandy hit were already at Irene levels, so all they could do was hope they got it right.

It's not that there's ever a good time for a civilization-battering natural disaster, but for dealers, Hurricane Sandy coming at the end of the month was the worst possible time. These last few days of the month are when they'd be discounting cars and courting shoppers to meet their monthly quotas. Luxury dealers might take the brunt of the hit, as a report in Bloomberg indicates that Volvo, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Acura sell from 23 to 25 percent of their wares in New York, Washington and Philadelphia.

According to the The New York Times, as of Tuesday night there were eight million people without power due to the storm, 2.3 million of them in New York state and another 2.6 million in New Jersey. Power outages there might last the rest of the week, if not longer. The Washington Post reported that the D.C. area is getting back to business, but it was shut down entirely for two days. Elsewhere, it's been reported that "the Northeast back to business," but that's the business of cleaning up, not the business of selling cars.

The 'good' news, relatively speaking, for dealers and the luxury makers is that Hurricane Sandy didn't change analysts' sales predictions for the month, nor the year. October is traditionally the slowest month of the year anyway, and the annualized rate of 14.8 to 14.9 million 2012 sales might be a little soggy, but appears to have emerged intact.

ICON Dodge D200 Reformer Series pickup is an unstoppable rebel force

ICON Dodge D200 Reformer

Icon 4x4 has once again made a big splash at SEMA, this time with its heavily customized 1965 Dodge D200 Crew Cab pickup built as part of its Reformer Series old machinery with modern underpinnings. We love it.

Powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins turbo-diesel inline six-cylinder engine pumping out 975 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels, courtesy of some tweaking from Banks Performance, we have a feeling there's not much that can stand in this brute's way.

Having a crapton of ground clearance certainly doesn't hurt, either, thanks in no small part to a 4.5-inch Baja 1000 Chase lift kit, Fox 3.0 reservoir shocks and 37-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires. The interior wasn't left out, with seats covered in free-range American Indian Reservation sourced bison leather, plus a JL Audio subwoofer and amp, 165 KRC series mid-range speakers and tweeters to pump, pump the jams.

Feel free to read more in the press release below, but not before checking out the high-res gallery of live images above.

Kelderman Ford F-250 Super Duty laughs at lesser trucks

Kelderman Ford F-250 Super Duty

Don't be confused; for every low, fast and/or sleek looking car at the SEMA show, there is at least one towing truck or SUV. The off-road and working vehicles of the world are well represented here in Las Vegas, as typified by this Ford F-250 XLT Crew Cab by Kelderman Air Suspension Systems and Tim Nicolau Designs.

The huge Super Duty diesel has between eight- and ten-inches of available lift via tricked-out suspension components and an AccuAir TouchPad air suspension management system. It can probably drive over most of the traffic in and around the Las Vegas convention center, which means we're seriously considering it for our escape vehicle later in the week.

Enjoy the monstrous live image gallery, attached.

Jay Leno burns rubber in Tesla Model S

Jay Leno burns rubber in black Tesla Model S

Jay Leno has a pretty big soft spot for alternative-fuel vehicles. From his steam-powered relics to his beloved Chevrolet Volt, the comedian's automotive interests are nothing if not varied. In the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage, Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen stops by the Big Dog Garage to show off his company's new Model S. Jay gets a closer look at the five-door EV's interesting touchscreen controls, expansive moonroof and yes, even the third-row jump seats, before taking to the road. The clip explains why Tesla eschewed the chunky standardized EV charger for a more svelte unit and how the company managed to serve up impressive aerodynamics without sacrificing styling.

Leno takes the time to whir the Model S around the greater Los Angeles area before hopping on the freeway for a quick spin. This particular model features the largest battery pack available, which gives the Model S a total range of around 300 miles. Check out the clip below for a closer look.

Troller R-X Concept is a Brazilian Ford Bronco for the new age

Troller R-X Concept (Brazil)

Until Ford bought it in 2007, Troller was an independent Brazilian brand that made the T4 and the Pantanal pickup. The T4, still in production, looks like a Jeep Wrangler hooked up with an old Ssangyong Korando and a snorkel. With Ford blood coursing through its design offices, the TR-X concept shown off at the So Paulo Auto Show looks like a Wrangler hooked up with an old Bronco and Toyota FJ Cruiser behind one of the booths at SEMA.

The TR-X is said to symbolize the essence of Toller, and while it hasn't been approved for production, we have a feeling that an appropriate response from the Brazilian public could give it a chance of seeing daylight. There's a press release below, as well as a couple of high-res photos.

Neiman Marcus Christmas Book McLaren special editions sell out in two hours

McLaren MP4-12c Spider Neiman Marcus limited edition parked in showroom

Apparently, despite the global economic downturn, some people out there still have large sums of disposable income. We know this because Neiman Marcus sold through a dozen special edition McLaren 12C Spiders in less than two hours Wednesday. At $354,000 each, this single offering grossed Neiman Marcus a staggering $35,400 a minute. Not that we should be surprised. Last year, the retailer sold 10 brand-new Ferrari FF specials out in a mere 50 minutes and in 2009, Neiman Marcus cleared out 50 special Jaguar XJ sedans in four hours and four minutes.

The retailer's annual Christmas Book extravaganza offered the supercar packaged with first-class travel to the UK, two nights at a five-star hotel there, a tour of the McLaren Tech Center and dinner with McLaren chairman Ron Dennis. Each car also includes matching luggage and a numbered stainless-steel badge. One of NM's high-rolling catalog shoppers will be able to say they own the very first McLaren 12C Spider sold to the public.

Neiman Marcus says customers should have their Spiders in time for unwrapping Christmas morning. Let's hope the fortunate recipients live some place warm and that their roads are clear enough to enjoy a truly happy holiday.

VW outsells GM in China for first time in 8 years

In case you didn't know, Volkswagen is hell-bent on becoming the largest automaker in the world. The German carmaker has inched closer to that goal, having outsold General Motors in China last quarter for the first time in eight years.

Volkswagen's sales in China, its largest marker, increased by 21 percent last quarter to 704,991 units. Those numbers almost tripled GM's third-quarter growth, and were enough to beat out the American automaker's 664,765 sales. GM, however, still leads in year-to-date sales in China by a slim margin of around 77,000 units. The Asian nation also happens to be GM's largest market, and according to the report in Automotive News, China's car market may grow to be larger than the US, Japan and Germany combined in three years' time.

About the news his company was bested in China by VW last quarter, GM CEO Dan Akerson is quoted saying, "It's not whether you're the biggest car manufacturer. It's whether you want to be the most profitable." It should be noted of these figures that GM includes truck figures, yet excludes Hong Kong and Macau from its Chinese sales numbers, while VW does just the opposite. Through September of this year, Volkswagen had 5 of the 10 best selling vehicles in China. GM boasted three of the cars on that list.

One car not on China's Top 10 list is the Malibu. Though GM's second-best selling car in the US, it has been called a "disaster" by Lin Huaibin of IHS Global Insight. The roughly 29,000 units sold were apparently unable to hang with VW's Skoda competitor.

The Automotive News report cites anti-Japanese sentiments and older GM product as reasons for Volkswagen's third quarter rally. Other brands with increased sales included Hyundai, Kia and Ford, citing that the jump in sales for these brands helped their parent companies counter losses incurred in the beleaguered European car market.

ICON releases first official photos of SEMA-bound D200 Pickup

ICON D200 for SEMA 2012

ICON has rolled out a slew of official photos of its D200 Pickup headed for this year's SEMA show. Built with some help from the diesel-fiends at Banks Power, this 1965 Dodge D200 Crew Cab uses a modern Dodge 3500 chassis. That means there's a 5.9-liter Cummins inline-six thrashing around under the hood, good for 975 pound-feet of torque. Much of that twist comes from the Banks toy box, including tricks like a Six-Gun Diesel Tuner, Banks iQ Man-Machine Interface, a Monster Ram Intake Manifold and Monster Diesel Dual Exhaust among others.

The chassis rides on a 4.5-inch Baja 1000 Chase lift kit that utilizes Fox 3.0 reservoir shocks to make room for the 37-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires at each corner. As always, the body and cabin will receive the trademark ICON attention to detail. Inside, this D200 offers up leather seating sourced from free-range American Indian Reservation bison, and custom tailgate latches, mirrors and other trim bits serve as the icing on the cake. You can check out the press release below for more information. The ICON D200 will bow at SEMA early next week.

Dealers confront carmakers over two-tier pricing, forced upgrades

In a speech for the Automotive Press Association in Detroit, the chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), Bill Underriner, laid out the two most important issues it seeks to address with carmakers: two-tier pricing and compulsory dealership facility upgrades.

The former is more easily understood as bonuses for sales targets sell X amount of cars, receive X amount of extra gravy from the carmaker. The bonuses also escalate, so that a certain sales target beyond X means a proportionally larger bonus than was had at the previous target. NADA's contention is that practice results in favortism that ignores the size and diversity of dealerships. Larger dealers can offer lower prices and sell more cars than smaller outlets, with the effect of potentially creating different pricing in the same markets, the bulk of the bonus money then going to the larger dealerships and improving their positions.

The second issue is about giving dealers a larger voice in the matter of "facility image programs," such as what dealers had to do to get the Fiat 500 and, more recently, the SRT guidelines about what dealers will be required to do in order to sell the new Viper. Building out a new showroom with mandated facilities can cost millions, and NADA wants earlier and more input into the programs to ensure they work on the local scale and that the changes endure. Said Underriner, "We want to know whether we are investing in the kind of dealership that will be most competitive in 2020 and beyond."

The dealer body has created task forces to investigate both issues. An NADA press release is below, Underriner's full speech can be found here.

2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP will start at $39,950*

2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP - front three-quarter view

Get your wallets ready, folks. The 2013 Mini John Cooper Works GP arrives this fall, and we've now learned that the cost of entry for the potent little hatchback is $39,950, (*) including $700 for destination.

Aside from an adorably tough appearance, that just-under-$40,000 price tag gets you a whole host of performance goodies, including a turbocharged four-cylinder engine good for 218 horsepower and as much as 207 pound-feet of torque. No, that isn't any more oomph than what you get in the standard JCW Hardtop, but there's a whole lot more to the GP kit. For starters, there's a fully adjustable coilover suspension, not to mention a reduction in overall weight at 2,558 pounds, the GP is 121 pounds lighter than a normal John Cooper Works Hardtop.

A Mini spokesperson confirmed to Autoblog that the JCW GP can only be purchased one way, and will be offered as an option package on the standard John Cooper Works Hardtop. Its starting price represents a $5,150 increase over a standard JCW model, and is the most expensive model in the Mini range (the next being the $35,550 John Cooper Works Countryman).

Scroll down for a full look at pricing for the 2013 model year Mini lineup.

Audi R8 E-Tron program on hold, facing cancellation? [UPDATE]

Audi R8 E-Tron in red on auto show floor

Throughout its brief history from concept car at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, to production-bound prototype the Audi R8 E-Tron has promised supercar levels of entertainment in a sexy German wrapper. A prospective range of 150 miles with acceleration on the order of 0-60 in under five seconds suggested a more luxurious rival for the Tesla Roadster, and a challenger for the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive at the E-Tron's expected launch in early 2013.

Now it seems like Audi may have slammed on the regenerative brakes, as it were.

Car and Driver reports that the R8 E-Tron plan is on hold, pending a project review ordered by new research and development head, Wolfgang Drheimer. Concerns about the project include a lack of sufficiently advanced and reasonably inexpensive batteries with which to power the car, as well as a buyer pool sufficiently rich and reasonably motivated to drop big sums on the R8 EV.

The Car and Driver report indicates that the expected launch in the first part of next year is now off the table, and that the entire project faces existential jeopardy.

UPDATE: We were able to speak with a member of Audi's team regarding the fate of the R8 E-Tron, who basically corroborated the earlier Car and Driver report, with a few clarifications. Audi claims that the "initial" run of R8 E-Trons was always meant to be very limited (ten cars), and that those cars were essentially meant to serve as evaluation models for the project as a whole. The discrepancy seems to be in what eventually happens to this first run; first plans indicated that they would end up in public hands, while now Audi states that they are "primarily intended for internal purposes."

On a positive note: While the future of the R8 E-Tron looks pretty cloudy (at least in the pure-EV form), we're told that the A3 E-Tron is still on track for arrival in 2014.

Unofficial Porsche 918 Spyder pricing pops up on web

The gents on the Rennteam forum have come upon unofficial pricing for the Porsche 918 Spyder. By now, in view of the prices of barrier-crushing, hybrid exotics and since we've already talked about Porsche considering a mid-engined supercar priced between the 911 and the 918, the 768,026 euro ($997,585 US) price to join the 918 Spyder club shouldn't be all that surprising.

Also not surprising? Having seen the options list for a traditional Porsche, ticking the 918's options boxes is a way to send the adding machine to infinity and beyond. Adding the Weissach Package takes the price to 839,426 euro ($1.09M US), a combination of other a la carte options such as coating the car in foil instead of paint (11,900 euro or $15,480 US on its own), magnesium wheels (29,750 euro or $38,700 US) and a six-point-harness (2,975 euro or $3,870 US). It also deletes some features like the air conditioning, Burmeister stereo and the standard door handles. By way of these deletions and swapping standard parts for carbon fiber and magnesium, weight is reduced by about 77 pounds and the 'Ring time is shortened by two seconds.

Other options include a liquid metal paint for 47,600 euro ($61,918 US) you can add that to the foil for a total of 59,500 euro ($77,397 US) a lift system for the front axle for 8,925 euro, a special German leather for 23,800 euro and a five-piece set of luggage for 17,731 euro. This is couch change compared to the cost of the car for buyers who find Benjamins and gold ingots in their La-Z-Boys. Assuming these prices are correct, we don't know how they'll compare to US numbers, but it's not like it matters; once you're near seven figures for the entry-level model of a car, well, who's really worried about the cost?

Ford shows SEMA-bound Mustang, F-150 and Escape variants

After already tipping its hand with a goodly selection of Focus ST concept teasers, as well as a passel of tuned Fusions, Ford has let loose with more images and information regarding its huge presence at this year's SEMA show. And, while we'll be bringing live reports of all the SEMA goodness to you next week, we couldn't help but want to share these last minute previews.

Four Mustang concept sketches have been offered up for our consumption today, including three cars based on the Mustang GT 5.0 and one based on the V6. All three of the GTs carry significant appearance modifications: bigger wheels, bespoke paint jobs and the whole shebang. The Mothers/Autosport Dynamics/RTR car boasts performance upgrades that net some 650 horsepower, while the DSO Eyewear car is kicking out a massive 750 ponies.

A brace of Ford F-150 trucks and one monster F-250 are repping for the pickup segment. Truckin' Magazine has done up a race-ready F-150 with a chopped look, bigger brakes and an upgraded interior. The diesel-powered F-250 is by Kelderman Air Suspension Systems, so it's natural to see that it has an airbag suspension with eight to ten inches of lift.

A few hotted up versions of Ford's new Escape will be presented as well, to round out this fleet of tuned fun by The Blue Oval. Be sure to check in, early and often next week, for live versions of all of the madness. In the meantime, find fuller information on all of these SEMA models in the press release below, and images in the associated galleries.

Chevy refuses to pay bonuses to dealer with Bass Pro Shops-style showroom

Avid duck hunter Marc Heitz knows ducks would rather land on a pond already populated by ducks. Heitz is also a Chevy dealer, and when it came time to build a new facility, he figured car shoppers were a lot like ducks.

"When people see other people on our lot, they're comfortable stopping," Heitz tells Automotive News.

The best way to attract people to his lot, he theorized, was to give them reasons beyond cars and trucks. His Norman, OK showroom has a 45-foot waterfall, an aquarium stocked with local fish species and animal tracks on the floor lead to an arcade for the kids.

Outside the log-cabin-like dealership are bear and elk statues, a picnic area and two dog parks. It feels more Bass Pro Shops than car dealer.

General Motors agrees that it's certainly not your average Chevrolet dealership. And because the Heitz building doesn't have Chevy's signature blue cladding and gold bowtie, GM says it will not pay Heitz his $250,000 quarterly dealer-excellence incentive. A GM spokesman said the company will be glad to reinstate the payments if only Heitz will modify the building to be in compliance with the corporate branding plan, including removing the animal footprints.

"It would be like putting socks on a rooster," Heitz tells AN. And it looks like Heitz is no fan of footware for fowl. He said he doesn't understand why GM wants to mess with something that's working (his dealership sold 1,900 vehicles in 2011), and he has no plans to change anything. Even if it costs him around $1 million a year. Maybe that's what "Chevy runs deep" means?

ICON FJ-44 checks in to Jay Leno's Garage

Icon FJ-44 on Jay Leno's Garage

Jay Leno is a big fan of ICON machinery. The comic and TV personality has already featured vehicles like the ICON Bronco and Derelict DeSoto on separate episodes, and now owner Jonathan Ward has stopped by the Big Dog Garage to show off the company's latest creation: The FJ-44. Unlike the company's other efforts, the FJ-44 isn't based on any historical model. Instead, ICON engineered the four-door aluminum bodywork and has it manufactured by a separate supplier. The company's workers powdercoat the body for a little extra durability and plop an LS-series General Motors V8 under the hood with up to 420 horsepower.

If you want one, get ready to shell out $160,000 for the privilege. If we had the cash, we'd have one in the garage in a heartbeat. Leno seems impressed both by the craftsmanship and the vehicle's on-road manners, though the clip below doesn't venture off road. We imagine this creation would do just fine no matter where you pointed the nose. Check it out for yourself.

Renault shows DCross Concept in Brazil

The So Paulo Motor Show continues to heat up and bring us interesting new vehicle unveilings. Next year, we may have to tough it out and trek down to Brazil for the 28th edition of the auto show. The most recent development from So Paulo is the Renault DCross concept. In what appears to be a gussied-up Dacia Duster, the DCross gets a bright green and matte black paint scheme, a raised ride height, roof racks and a spare tire atop the concept. If off-roading is your thing, the DCross, at the very least, looks the part.

Little else is given in details other than what we can gather from the photos. The concept, which catches the eye far more in the live shots than in the OEM image, was joined on the Renault stand by the Fluence GT, Clio 2013, and Captur concept.

Will this concept predict the future for a Renault SUV/CUV? We're not sure, but its bullish looks seem ready for the Dakar Rally. The 2013 edition of Dakar is not until May of 2013, but the DCross already has us thinking of the grueling endurance race, held Peru, Chile and neighboring Argentina. Read up on Renault's debuts from Brazil in the press release below.

2013 Ram 1500 earns Truck of Texas honors

Auto writers around the country tend to specialize in different vehicles based on the trends of our respective home markets. The New England Motor Press Association, for example, presents an award every year for the best winter vehicle. With that in mind, it is fitting that the Texas Auto Writers Association doles out an annual truck award. This year, the TAWA "Truck of Texas" is the 2013 Ram 1500.

In a announcement from TAWA, the new Ram took top honors based in no small part on, "a new 3.6-liter V6 that boasts 42 percent more power, improved fuel economy, infotainment upgrades and available eight-speed automatic transmission and air suspension." And according to Ram CEO Fred Diaz, "Automotive reporters have reacted extremely favorably to the new 2013 Ram 1500, and our research tells us that resonates with truck buyers." The Ram 1500 unseated the previous Truck of Texas, the 2012 Ford F-150.

The Texas Auto Writers Association Truck Rodeo was also an occasion for journalists to award an SUV of Texas, and thankfully, the distinction is made between SUV and CUV. The Jeep Grand Cherokee took top honors in the SUV department, with TAWA pointing to models like the off-road-ready Trailhawk and feature-laden Overland Summit. It is the third consecutive year that the Grand Cherokee has achieved this accolade. The award for top crossover went to the 2013 Buick Enclave, which is in its first year of a new design. Honda warns dealers to clear out 2012 Civic stock, 2013 emergency refresh on sale Nov. 29

2012 Honda Civic - front three-quarter view, maroon

Thanks to an anonymous tipster, Autoblog has learned that the so-called "emergency refresh" of the Honda Civic is just around the corner. In fact, the automaker is already urging its dealers to clear out remaining 2012 model year stock because "The changes made to the 2013 model will make the outgoing 2012 Civic a difficult model [to] sell when they are side to side." Those are the words of David Hendley, Assistant Vice President of Honda National Sales excerpted from a recent letter to dealers. The communiqu goes on to note that the refreshed Civic will go on sale on November 29 a date, we note, that coincides with press days for the Los Angeles Auto Show.

According to Hendley's letter, buyers can look forward to "dramatic improvements to the exterior styling that moves Civic into a more premium sporty direction." The text also promises that the 2013's interior will receive "upgrades and improvements to bring more sophistication and quality to its appearance." For his part, American Honda President Tetsuo Iwamura has previously been quoted as saying that changes will be made to "improve the Civic's drivability," suggesting suspension and powertrain alterations are afoot as well.

The ninth-generation Civic has only been on sale for a year, and such a substantial refresh this early in the generation's lifecycle is unprecedented these days.

The ninth-generation Civic has only been on sale for a year, and such a substantial refresh this early in the generation's lifecycle is unprecedented these days not just for Honda, but for the industry as well. The Japanese automaker has been stung by widespread criticism for the 2012 Civic range's lackluster dynamics, lessened interior quality, noise levels, low feature count and uninspiring design perceived shortcomings exacerbated by the industry's hyper-competitive compact car segment. Among the critics, the Civic was given poor marks in a review by this site as well as influential institute Consumer Reports, which went so far as to remove the Civic from its coveted Recommended list. In fact, CR editors labeled the 2012 Civic a "car to avoid" in August.

A lack of critical praise doesn't seem to be harming Civic sales, however. According to the automaker's own sales data, the 2012 model is performing quite handsomely, having sold 234,029 units through September of this year, with 21,546 of those units coming last month alone. That means Honda is shifting almost 40-percent more units this year than the (admittedly aging) eighth-generation model did in 2011. The Civic is now selling near the top of its class, and Hendley notes that the company's Indiana plant will be running at full-tilt to build the updated 2013 model in fact, he indicates that the US will even draw units from Canadian production.

When contacted for comment about the Hendley dealer letter, Sage Marie, Honda's Senior Manager of Public Relations, confirmed to Autoblog that the automaker will have Civic news to reveal next month, noting that Honda is keen "to ensure Civic remains the benchmark in the segment and remains as competitive as it can be."

Real-life Warthog from Halo ready to take Master Chief into battle

Warthog from Halo real-life vehicle

343 Studios (part of Bungie) is preparing its Halo 4 video game for release on November 6, and someone there had the sensational idea to commission a life-sized M12 Force Application Vehicle, otherwise known as a Warthog. G4's X-Play program visited Aria, an Irvine, California company whose custom build work we've seen at SEMA, to see how the electronic specs are being translated into a full-scale drivable Brute-killing machine.

Details like the donor vehicle, top speed and source of the Graf/Hauptman Solar/Saline Actuator are "classified." But we do know that it's being built to scale, which means it is sized for Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, more commonly known as Master Chief, who happens to be seven feet tall when he's all geared up.

So you probably won't be able to reach the pedals, but no matter, everybody wins with this. Except the Flood. Or whoever ends up challenging the UNSC in Halo 4. Check out the G4TV video segment below.

Jeep to build all model lines in China?

2013 Jeep Wrangler Moab - front three-quarter view

We're quite used to seeing Jeep knockoffs come out of China (e.g. SsangYong Korando generations one through three), but if a new report is to be believed, we may start seeing the fair dinkum being built in Asia once again, too.

According to Bloomberg, Chrysler parent Fiat is in serious negotiations with its Chinese joint venture partner, Guangzhou Automobile Group, over plans to build Jeeps locally. Of course, the brand previously built models in China before Fiat came into its management picture, but now there's talk of possibly assembling more than one model and possibly the entire brand portfolio in China. The additional capacity would likely only augment Jeep's US output.

Jeep currently builds all of its models in the US, but it has been enjoying rapidly growing overseas sales and is looking to capitalize on its momentum. Bloomberg notes that the marque is targeting sales of 500,000 overseas units, which would represent a three-fold increase over its 2009 numbers. In fact, more than three out of four overseas deliveries for Chrysler brands this year have carried a seven-slot grille. Demand for the Grand Cherokee and Compass models in China are said to be particularly strong.

Mercedes mulling baby G-Wagon off-roader

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Car reports Mercedes-Benz may be considering expanding its G-Class line to include a new, smaller model. The so-called GLG would serve as a competitor for the upcoming, next-generation Land Rover Defender. Internally, the smaller G wears the code name X156 and will be based on the A-Class architecture. Expect to see styling lifted straight from the larger G, complete with a horizontal roof line and near-vertical back hatch. Car also insists Mercedes-Benz will retain the A-Class front-wheel drive layout for two-wheel drive models, while 4MATIC models will also be available.

Under the hood, the company plans to serve up a range of engines, including a 1.6-liter gasoline mill good for 122 horsepower as well as a 2.0-liter unit with anywhere from 156 to 211 hp on hand. Four diesel variants will also show up in the EU, the most powerful of which will displace 2.1 liters and pump out 204 hp. Car also suggests AMG will get its hands on the pint-sized bruiser. The product of that union should serve up 345 hp, a seven-speed automatic gearbox and beefier brakes.

That seems like an awful lot of detail for a model Mercedes-Benz executives haven't even signed off on yet, though the report says the vehicle could get the green light at any moment.

Bailout and gas prices hot buttons in Presidential debate

The pros and cons of the auto bailout and concerns about the rising price of gasoline have been a political football throughout this election season. So, it should come as no surprise that the auto industry was brought up more than a few times in last night's heated presidential debate.

Roughly a minute into the debate, the subject was raised by President Obama when asked a question about unemployment. The President's answer: "I want to build manufacturing jobs in this country again. Now when Gov. Romney said we should let Detroit go bankrupt, I said we're going to bet on American workers and the American auto industry and it's coming back."

Romney countered by pointing out that Obama followed the Governor's advice offered in his New York Times editorial "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt" from 2008. Romney stated that the President did, in fact, let Chrysler go bankrupt, and pointed out, "My plan was to have the company go through bankruptcy... and come out stronger." Obama retorted that Romney's view of taking the automakers into bankruptcy did not provide them with any way to stay open, and would have lost a million jobs in the process.

The candidates also spoke on energy and oil production, primarily in response to questions of recently spiking gas prices. The President pointed out that oil production on federal land is at its highest in 16 years and natural gas production is at its highest levels in decades. Romney responded by saying that overall oil production is down 14 percent as a result of cutting licenses for drilling. Additionally, Romney criticized Obama for blockage of the Keystone oil pipeline.

Surprisingly, yesterday's bankruptcy filing of A123 Systems was not brought up, though Republicans, including Romney, have criticized the Obama administration's investment in electric cars as well as grants and loans for battery makers. If Tuesday's Chapter 11 filing was not mentioned last night, it will most certainly come up in the days and weeks to come.

Sorry Clint and Eminem, your ads were not the most significant for Chrysler [w/video]

Though it has been the company's star-laden Super Bowl commercials starring Eminem and Clint Eastwood that have garnered the most buzz for Chrysler and its ad agency Wieden + Kennedy, the principals agree that it was a far earlier spot that has made the biggest impact thus far.

Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and John Jay, Global Executive Creative Director for Wieden + Kennedy, agreed recently that it was the commercial for the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has had the most significant impact for Chrysler in the post-bailout era.

The Grand Cherokee, you'll remember, was the first product introduced by the Chrysler Group coming out of bankruptcy, and was therefore poised to make a big impression good or bad on the American public. The Jeep commercial then needed to hammer home the notion of a quality, American-made product, while also laying the groundwork for the Imported from Detroit commercials (of Super Bowl fame) that were still to come. Marchionne called the Jeep commercial "a turning point" and said that it was still being tweaked, right down to the very end.

Watching the spot today (scroll down to have a look), it is easier to see it as a successful foundational piece of the messaging that we're getting from Chrysler today.

Battery maker A123 systems defaults on loan, files for bankruptcy

After a long and bumpy road, battery-producer A123 Systems has officially filed for bankruptcy. This news comes immediately after word that the Waltham, Massachusetts-based company may not have enough cash to fund operations, or even seek bankruptcy protection. This news has ramifications elsewhere in the industry, as A123 had contracts with Fisker Automotive as well as with BMW.

In a press release issued this morning, A123 announced that it will sell off all automotive assets to Johnson Controls. A123 will file Chapter 11, while Johnson Controls will provide $72.5 million in debtor-in-possession financing. The aim of the financing is to support A123 while it attempts to pursue alternative business operations.

To anyone following the battery maker closely, this news should not come as a shock. It was estimated that A123 lost about $67 million dealing with a battery recall for the Fisker Karma. In May of this year, the company posted a $125 million net loss. Shares for A123 have fallen 85 percent this year as the company has posted 14 straight quarterly losses.

With news of the bankruptcy, it wouldn't be surprising if A123 were be brought up in tonight's presidential debate. A123 received $249 million in federal grant money in 2009. The company also received $100,000 in 2006 under the Bush Administration, and additional tax exemptions and credits during Mitt Romney's time as a Massachusetts governor, so this issue has many sides.

For Fisker, the issue at hand is finding a new battery supplier. Johnson Controls has had previous hybrid ventures and continues to explore lithium-ion batteries. This could be an opportunity for the Milwaukee-based company to expand that part of its business, perhaps replacing A123 as Fisker's battery supplier.

Toyota recovers from recalls, Mother Nature to regain customer loyalty crown

After dealing with flailing global economies, numerous recalls and safety allegations and then the depleted inventory from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Experian Automotive says that Toyota is finally back on top when it comes to consumer loyalty in the US. Toyota edged out General Motors and Ford Motor Company to grab this loyalty crown for the first time since the third quarter of 2009.

The metric for this title was determined by owners of a vehicle choosing from the same corporate automaker for their next vehicle purchase. For Toyota, this means that 47.3 percent of its current customers will purchase a Scion, Lexus or Toyota model as their next car compared to 46.2 percent for GM and 46 percent for Ford. Honda and Hyundai rounded out the top five in this list.

In terms of individual brand loyalty when buyers come back to the same brand Ford took the spot in this category with 44.7 percent of buyers returning to the Ford showroom for their next purchase, including six cars in the top 10 for overall loyalty. Ford Fusion customers are the most loyal with 59.9 percent buying another Ford, but Flex, Edge, Five Hundred, Escape and Fiesta are all in the top 10. Oddly enough, the top vehicle among brand loyalty was the Chevrolet Sonic (which has only been on the market for less than a year we're not sure what to make of that...) with 60.3 percent of its buyers trading in for another Chevy product.

Other interesting facts to note from Experian Automotive's study include the median age of vehicles has increased from 9.8 years up to 10.8 years since 2008, indicating that people are keeping their cars for an extra year before trading them in. Besides Toyota, Chrysler was the only automaker listed as having increased its market share and vehicle purchases in the second quarter of this year.

Gibbs outlines sales plans for new BMW-powered $40,000 Quadski land and sea ATV [w/video]

Gibbs Quadski on the water

We've reported on news about Gibbs Sports Amphibians here in the past; the company has spent years developing products that are equally at home on the land and in the water. In fact, in addition to the (relatively) well-known Aquada amphibious car, we've know that Gibbs has been working on this amphibious ATV for years.

And while the company's Aquada got strung up in red tape, its has finally announced that the vehicle shown here, dubbed Quadski, is just about to head into production with a price tag estimated at $40,000.

After just quick glance in its wheels-down position, the Quadski may seem like your typical ATV, but the truth is that it is an entirely singular concept. Powered by a 1.3-liter four-cylinder (sourced from BMW) pushing out 175 horsepower and 103 lb-ft of torque, the Quadski is capable of attaining speeds of 45 miles per hour on land and on the water. Though quite a sizable vehicle the Quadski weighs in at a hearty 1,300 pounds and measures more than 10-feet long the one-passenger amphibian is likely to have a significant range/operating envelope thanks to its 15-gallon gas tank. The Quadski can be driven directly from the land into the water; its four wheels retract and deploy at the push of a button.

Gibbs is expecting to find a substantial market for the Quadski, too. The company states that some $200 million have been invested in the vehicle's 15-year development to date. Production of the aquaquad will commence at a facility in Auburn Hills, MI, where maximum production capability is expected to see some 20 units per hour completed. Total output for the first year is expected to be a much more modest 1,000 units, however.

Official pricing will be announced just a little bit closer to the Quadski's on-sale date, sometime in mid-November. Gibbs expects to open around 20 dealership locations over the next 12 months, focusing on the Midwest, New York, Texas and the southeastern US to start.

Scroll down to watch a video of the Quadski in action and to read the official Gibbs press release.

Watch Typhoon Jelawat flip a car, toss a dumpster in Japan

Typhoon Jelwat made landfall in Okinawa, Japan over the weekend causing plenty of damage in its wake, and these two videos below show just how powerful a weakening tropical storm can be. According to The Weather Channel, when the storm hit Okinawa, it had sustained winds of 83 miles per hour and gusts up to 115 mph which obviously is enough to throw cars around a parking lot like toys.

In the first video, U.S. Marines stationed at Camp Kisner record cars being pushed around the parking lot before a small car tips over, slides across the parking lot and then tumbles through the air. The second video shows a cherry Mazda RX-7 at Kadena Air Force Base come within feet of becoming another victim of the storm as a dumpster slides right past the car slamming into a minivan.

As bad as the videos look, things could have been much worse, as Jelawat had been recorded as a Super Typhoon with winds around 160 mph just earlier last week and was downgraded to a less powerful typhoon before making landfall. Check out the carnage the wind can cause in the videos below, but beware, there is quite a bit of explicit Not Safe For Work language in both.

Surveillance camera shows Mercedes driver parking fail

Mercedes-Benz E-Class owner has costly parking issue caught on security camera

It's happened to you or someone you know: You think your car is in Park and begin to exit your vehicle, and then it starts to roll. Now, most drivers catch themselves that moment, step on the brakes, throw the gearshift into Park and wait for their heart rate to come back down. This was not one of those times.

In this case, a Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the unfortunate vehicle involved caught on a security camera, and its operator thinks that the car is in Park or that the emergency brake is engaged. We won't even talk about the fact that the driver nearly drags the car along a cement wall while backing it out, but it it appears to come to a stop on the entrance to the street. When the driver gets out to pick something up in the driveway, the luxury sedan starts to crawl forward thanks to gravity, and unfortunately for the driver, it's aimed directly at her.

The driver initially manages to avoid being run over by her own Mercedes-Benz, but in the process of attempting to recover, things get... worse. We'll keep the conclusion a surprise until you check out the video below.

While you may not go to hell for muffling a chuckle in response to this video, we feel bad for the victim here. There is no description for this video, so we cannot confirm if she was badly hurt, but hopefully not. And we can't help but sympathize a little we've always felt that Benz's newer column-mounted electronic gear selector (with its "P" button on the end of the stalk) can be a bit fiddly. Clearly, it takes some practice.

Nissan recalling select 2012 Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra models over wheel hub fractures

The Nissan Frontier, Xterra and Pathfinder might all be rugged trucks and SUVs, but two-wheel-drive versions of these vehicles are being recalled due to front suspension components that could possibly fail. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan is recalling about 2,400 of these models due to defective front wheel hubs that were installed on 2012 model-year vehicles built from June 19 through July 12.

Wheel hubs that are faulty could crack and possibly break, which could cause the vehicle to be disabled or get into an accident. NTHSA did not specify if any accidents were reported as a result of this concern, but it appears Nissan caught the problem early enough to limit any large-scale problems. To resolve this recall, Nissan is replacing both front wheel hubs on all affected two-wheel-drive Frontiers, Xterras and Pathfinders.

Nissan will start notifying affected customers on October 8, but check out NHTSA's press release below for more information.

GM recalling 67k Chevy Malibu, Pontiac G6 and Saturn Aura models in Canada

2008 Chevrolet Malibu - maroon - front three-quarter view

General Motors is recalling a total of 67,414 sedans in Canada for power steering failures. The campaign covers 2005, 2006 and 2008 Chevrolet Malibu and Malibu Maxx models as well as Pontiac G6 vehicles. The 2008 Saturn Aura is also included in the recall. Transport Canada says while power steering may fail, drivers will still be able to maintain control of their vehicle with additional steering effort. Owners will be notified of the failure by a chime and an illuminated warning light on the instrument panel.

Neither GM nor Transport Canada is saying what causes the failures, though the automaker has agreed to replace the steering column in 2005 and 2006 models, while 2008 vehicles will receive new power steering motor control modules. You can view the complete recall notice from Transport Canada below for more information. It is unclear whether or not U.S. vehicles will see a similar recall.

2013 Volvo V40 R-Design leaves us feeling blue in Paris

2013 Volvo V40 R Design - live on Paris Motor Show floor

We were more than a little bummed when Volvo proclaimed it didn't intend to bless the United States with its V40 hatchback/wagon. We're even more bummed now that there's this newly debuted R Design model at the Paris Motor Show.

Even though the most powerful engine remains the same 254-horsepower turbo five cylinder (a 115-horsepower diesel engine is also on offer), there are a number of worthwhile updates to the R Design over the standard V40. A reworked front fascia, rear diffuser, twin exhaust and five-spoke diamond-cut wheels in either 17- or 18-inch sizes add some spice to the car's already attractive shape.

If that's not enough, buyers can opt for the R Design Lux package to enjoy an embossed leather interior along with other high-end bits and pieces. There are also blue accents crowning the dash and its three switchable treatments Elegance, Eco and Performance.

Perhaps most intriguingly, though, Volvo is offering a suspension package that's been tuned by Swedish racing driver Robert Dahlgren. The chassis sits 10mm lower than stock, with firmer springs and shocks, uprated struts, monotube dampers and thicker antiroll bars. Yep, we wish we could get our hands on one of these in the States... And while we're wishing, how about a Polestar update, too?

In any case, feel free to peruse the press release below and check out our high-res Rebel Blue image gallery above.

Renault Clio is the bold new face of France's diamond brand

2013 Renault Clio live on show floor at Paris

Check out the new Renault Clio, which has just been revealed at the Paris Motor Show. If you like what you see, then chances you are going to like future Renault models. Along with introducing the fourth-generation Clio, Renault also says that this new styling will be the new face of the French automaker's future products.

Once classified as a supermini, the Clio has since grown into a B-segment contender similar to the closely related Nissan Versa. The centerpiece of the new design features a large Renault logo that stands out against a black background in the grille. Like the previous Clio, the new model will be available in both five-door hatchback and estate/station wagon variants, but for now, it doesn't appear a three-door model will make it into the mix.

Make no mistake, the Clio is one of the most important reveals of the entire Paris show. And Renault is treating it as such, with plans to launch it with "no fewer than five" new engines. On top of that, the big Clio hardware news is the addition of stop/start technology and a dual-clutch transmission available on the option list. Renault says that its 90-horsepower 1.5-liter dCi engine will attain fuel consumption figures close to a hybrid-electric vehicle, making it the first car in the B-segment to do so.

On the technology front, the Clio introduces Renault's new R-Link multimedia system that will eventually spread to the rest of the Renault lineup. R-Link not only includes features like TomTom navigation and traffic, but it also allows drivers to operate Coyote Series alerts (a European social-media-like service warning of road hazards) and the R-Link Store to find and use automotive apps.

Be sure to flip through our live photos of the Clio hatchback, and if you have time, Renault's mile-long press release is posted below.

Jay Leno's Garage visits Japan to drive Datsun 240Z, ask Nissan about successor

Datsun 240ZG on Jay Leno's Garage - video screencap

Typically Jay Leno's Garage gives us cool insights on rare, old and sometimes forgotten car models. In the latest episode, however, Jay takes us along to visit Nissan in Japan, where he talks about the next-generation of Z car.

The usually well-informed Leno starts the episode not knowing exactly what he's driving in a very special edition Nissan Fairlady 240ZG, though he does pronounce himself a fast fan of the original Z. After briefly motoring around Zama, Japan, The Chin drops in on the Nissan Technical Center, and gets the chance to ask Nissan design boss Shiro Nakamura, if there will be a new Z to mark Nissan's 80th anniversary in 2013. Jay also takes the opportunity to offer some insight as to what he'd like to see in a 2014 successor to the current 370Z.

Good times, as usual, with the king of car collecting. Please scroll down to watch the full episode.

Former Confederate Motors designer wants $500k to build three LSR bikes, document the process

Bienville Studios Kickstarter project motorcycle rendering

Out of the workshop of Birmingham, Alabama-based Confederate Motors has rolled several revolutionary bikes. JT Nesbitt designed the G2 Hellcat and the Wraith, two of the company's first models. Made of aircraft aluminum and carbon fiber, the $100,000 Wraith set a top speed record of 166.45 mph in its class at Bonneville in 2008. And now, Nesbitt has left Confederate to start his own company, Bienville Studios in New Orleans, to work on automotive projects. But he still likes motorcycles.

Nesbitt believes as much in the craftsmanship of a bike as he does the mechanics and engineering. Which made him a perfect fit for a Kickstarter project with Manifest Digital, a Chicago graphic design firm.

The goal of the Bienville Legacy Kickstarter project is to raise $500,000 in one month to fund the no-holds-barred creation of three record-setting bikes. Once the funds are booked, Nesbitt will begin putting together the bike you see above using only the highest grade aluminum, titanium, chrome-moly and carbon fiber. Without worrying about costs, profit margins, investors, hard-to-please customers and a bad economy, the team will be free to experiment however necessary to, as Nesbitt says in the video, create "... the fastest f***ing motorcycle ever built in this country."

Exotic materials will lend the bike lightness, while the power will come from a Motus 100 cubic-inch, 160-horsepower V4. As a side note, Motus, also located in Birmingham, was co-founded by another Confederate designer, Brian Case.

The $500k will also pay for "Tempus Veritas Revelat" (Time Reveals Truth), a documentary being shot of the bike build as well as for taking the three bikes to Bonneville for the attempts to break land speed records in three different classes.

A Kickstarter pledge of $15 or more will get investors a free download of the finished documentary. Several pledge levels above that, at $10,000, is a choice of two packages. First is the opportunity for you and 12 of your friends to work with the build team to create the bikes in New Orleans. Your other choice is a "long weekend" apprenticeship and permission to take a bike out for a ride.

Interested? Might want to hurry. The Kickstarter project has a long way before reaching its $500k goal, but its pledge window closes Oct. 22. Check out the project's video by scrolling down, then if you're interested, head over to Kickstarter.

VW design boss de'Silva says clean and simple design is the new black

2013 Volkswagen CC - front three-quarter view, silver

Moving forward, we can expect Volkswagen to shift its design language away from anything remotely extravagant. While speaking at the Tokyo launch of the Volkswagen Up!, company global design chief Walter de'Silva said minimalist styling is set to make a resurgence. De'Silva made it clear he believes design is an integral part of resale value, and that the design of models like the Golf helps solidify his brand's value worldwide. The designer said that while the flashier exteriors of models like the Hyundai Sonata, Ford Fusion and BMW 3 Series have been popular in recent years, he believes such looks are already starting to age. Perhaps that's why the redesigned CC "four-door coupe" shown above seems a bit more traditional than its predecessor.

Volkswagen, meanwhile, offers buyers design security, according to de'Silva. As quoted in Automotive News, the executive says: "People want to understand what they buy. There is a certain security in our design."

Porsche confirms Sport Turismo styling cues for rest of lineup

Whether or not it's ever going to be built, the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept sounds like it will be playing a pivotal role in upcoming Porsche products. Following the car's debut at the Paris Motor Show, Motor Trend sat down with Porsche AG President and CEO, Matthias Mller, to discuss where we might see elements from this stylish concept car in the future.

For those who liked the styling of the Panamera Sport Turismo Concept (and who wouldn't?) Mller said that the car's headlights and taillights will become part of the new design language on all future models. The taillights already pull from the 991 Porsche 911 and the headlights are very Boxster-like, but starting with the new Porsche Macan compact SUV, these two styling cues will be blended together to help create a new signature look for the brand. Up until now, Porsche has been trying to mimic the 911's styling on bigger cars, and while this idea seemed to work on the Cayenne, the Panamera's design has made it a controversial car to say the least.

One of the concept's key features was its plug-in hybrid drivetrain, and Mller confirmed that this system will make it into production next year on the Panamera (including in the U.S.) and then the following year for the Cayenne. He also stated that premium and "huge" cars are not quite ready for full battery-electric drive systems, so Porsche will continue to focus on plug-in hybrids over the next five to 10 years to balance fuel economy and performance.

Be sure to check out the full M/T interview with Mller and Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, for more juicy info on future Porsche models, including some talk on the 918 hybrid supercar.

Historic Ermini brand relaunching with Barchetta Sport

Ermini Seiottosei sports car - front three-quarter rendering

It's been fifty years since Italian automaker Ermini shuttered its doors, but it looks as if that hiatus has come to an end. The Florence-based sportscar manufacturer plans to launch a new creation, possibly called Seiottosei or 686, by the end of next year. The rear-engine, rear-wheel drive sportster will feature a space frame construction wherein the engine and the sequential transmission serve as structural members. The company isn't saying what sort of powerplant the car will use, though the questionably translated press release seems to indicate Ermini will eschew large displacement options for something lighter and more sprightly. Even so, the company plans to give its creation a power-to-weight ratio on par with most supercars.

The carbon fiber body panels for the "Barchetta Sport" model were penned by Giulio Cappellini, a designer from outside of the automotive sphere, and Ermini promises the finished product will be easy to maintain, offer low emissions and responsible fuel consumption. Check the full press run below for more information.

Cosworth, Hyundai building Genesis Racing Series concept for SEMA

Hyundai Cosworth Genesis Coupe Concept for SEMA

Hyundai is gearing up for this year's SEMA Show in a big way. The Korean automaker has partnered up with Cosworth to develop a special Genesis Coupe. The Cosworth CGRS Concept boasts a 389-horsepower version of the factory 3.8-liter, direct-injection V6. That's a respectable jump of 41 horsepower over the stock six cylinder, and the additional power comes courtesy of a Cosworth intake and exhaust, new engine control parameters and improved thermal management. A Cosworth big brake system and suspension help keep the coupe pointed in the right direction. This is SEMA, however, which means the coupe also gets a slathering of interior and exterior tweaks.

Inside, Cosworth served up a steering wheel, shift knob, pedals, shift boot and sports seats, while slathering the vehicle's body in satin and gloss blue paint. The stock front fascia was ditched in favor of a new piece with integrated carbon fiber brake ducts. Speaking of the composite, Cosworth whipped up a front splitter, side skirt, rear diffuser and trunk lid spoiler from the stuff just for this car. Look for the Cosworth Genesis Coupe to debut at the SEMA Show next month. Until then, check out the full press release below.

2014 Mazda6

Mazda Makes a Marvelous Mid-Sizer

2014 Mazda6

It's well known that Mazda is working through some corporate challenges at the moment, but the company's second-half news has been, in general, far better than the headlines from the first half. Global sales are up 12 percent, the CX-5 has sold 200,000 units worldwide and U.S. dealers are begging for more inventory. There's also a new factory on the way in Mexico that will assuage the profit-killing exchange-rate woes of building cars in Japan, and the next-generation MX-5 Miata whenever it arrives is going to bring an Alfa Romeo roadster with it.

Still, at the moment, it's probably true that there is more love for Mazda or perhaps there's actually more nostalgia than sales traction.

The company would like its brand new midsize segment competitor to change that.

So in one corner we have the 2014 Mazda6. In the other corner we have the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Volkswagen Passat and Chevrolet Malibu. That is not an exciting list for a car enthusiast, but arrayed en masse it's like Neo taking on the endless Agent Smiths in the playground scene in The Matrix: Reloaded what the other cars lack in individual character they more than make up for in suffocating, sledgehammer numbers. Example: Mazda's entire export production that's every one of its models that it sells in every other landmass besides Japan in August 2012 was 44,495. That same month there were 36,270 Camrys sold in the United States alone.

Mercedes-Benz previews next S-Class with Aesthetics S Concept

Mercedes-Benz Aesthetics S Concept

Mercedes-Benz took a moment at the Paris Motor Show to display its Aesthetics S Concept. Built as a combination static, physical sculpture and audio-visual presentation, the design exercise lends a glimpse at what we can expect to see from the next-generation S-Class. Mercedes-Benz projected a number of scenes onto the relief to highlight the design's lines and lineage, including images of W189, W108 and W126 S-Class models. Aligning the images of the S-Class ancestors with the new designs is a clever way to draw parallels between new and old.

Gordon Wagener, head of design for Mercedes-Benz, says the Aesthetics S Concept does more than point toward what's coming down the pike for the S-Class. The display also outlines what's in store for the rest of the company's products. Take a look at the Aesthetics S Concept in the video below for a better idea of what the next-generation of Mercedes-Benz products may look like.

What's next for Jaguar after F-Type? A small sedan and a utility vehicle

Porsche's heart lives in the rear end of the 911. The heart of Mercedes-Benz resides more in the brand values of the Three-Pointed Star than any one model. Mini is defined by petite packages wrapped in giant amounts of sass. Since the end of the Series III XJ in 1992, however, what has represented the unique and irreducible definition of Jaguar?

We're certain Jaguar is happy that the above question is moot, thanks to the arrival of the F-Type at the Paris Motor Show. Jaguar brand manager Adrian Hallmark tells Autocar that the $69,875 convertible is "the core of our range, and from now on it is our orientation point" it is the E-Type for our times, and will lead the way for Jaguars to come. We don't know fully what that means yet; until we drive it, it isn't clear if the champagne and confetti party of the F-Type's introduction will end in afterglow or hangover. Nevertheless, there is at least a direction now, which is a major waypoint.

It will start with surprise, surprise a small sedan and a utility vehicle. We've heard for ages that a BMW 3 Series rival had been dancing across drawing boards, and after years of equivocation, it looks like an SUV/CUV may have finally been acceded to. Hallmark tells Autocar that "Whatever we do will be driven by the three pillars of our brand: innovation, design and performance leadership," by which he presumably means "driven by the huge sales opportunities and cha-ching!" We don't blame him; the market segment is hurtling in that direction and leaving all those pounds on the table would be something the old Jaguar would do. Obviously, those days are over. All hail the F-Type.

Dodge Dart spotted in matte paint wearing 19-inch Pirelli P-Zeros

Matte Gray Dodge Dart Spy Photos

Our spy photographers have caught something interesting rolling around Auburn Hills. This Dodge Dart R/T wears some interesting matte gray paint as well as a set of 19-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero performance rubber. It's difficult to tell from this vantage, but the sedan may sit slightly lower than other models we've seen as well. Of course, it's difficult to miss the aggressive hood scoop planted front and center. Don't get too excited, though. Odds are this is not the much-rumored SRT-4, but rather a special one-off whipped up for the 2012 SEMA show next month. That hood, for example, comes straight from the Mopar catalog.

Still, we wouldn't rule out Dodge offering a matte paint on the Dart option sheet. If Hyundai can make the coating viable on a large volume model like the Veloster, there's certainly nothing stopping Chrysler from doing the same. Keep your ear to the ground for more information.
