It was inevitable. When the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG roadster made its debut at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, we knew an AMG-tuned version would soon hit the road.
The 2013 Mercedes Benz SL63 AMG builds on all the features of its more “sedate” parent: 275 pounds lighter thanks to the aluminum bodyshell and suspension components; Mercedes-Benz SLS-inspired exterior and interior elements; and so on. AMG then adds two engine options: the standard AMG 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 for 530 horsepower or the optional AMG Performance Package which tunes the engine to generate 557 ponies. The performance figures should get SL63 AMG fans drooling: 0-60 in 4.2 seconds, and an electronically limited speed of 186 mph. Note the latter figures apply only to those 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG roadsters with the AMG performance package. The SL63 AMG’s lower weight also improves fuel economy by up to 30 percent, though we really don’t see that as a big selling point for such a hot roadster. The EPA hasn’t released figures for the 2013 Mercedes SL63 AMG have not been released at the time of this post, but for its part the 2012 model has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 12 mpg city/19 mpg highway/14 mpg combined; you can do the math.
Standard features on the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG include seven-speed automatic transmission and ECO stop/start system that saves fuel by turning off the engine when the car is stopped. In addition to the extra power, the Mercedes SL63 AMG performance package adds a limited slip differential lock and brakes with red calipers. Standard comfort features include harman/kardon Logic 7 entertainment system and powered trunk lid with options including high-end Bang & Olufsen sound system and Magic Sky Control, which darkens the retractable glass roof within seconds.
